Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

The only thing I remember about Pat Patterson and Gerald Briscoe was that they were McMahon's lackies, and they continuously got owned by Stone Cold in hilarious fashion

I do have to say, how did Pat Patterson and Ray Stevens not get picked?

yes, I blame myself partly, but deezy and I wanted more balance with face/heels and more cruiserweight guys.

These two guys drew great in various territories and in big money federations for a good amount of time. Patterson was huge in the W/WWF too for a while before retiring from the ring
Patterson and Stevens were #1 and 2 on my draft board at the end. If there was one more round there is no way I don't take each of them.

Should we post our reviews and all in this topic? I'll work on mine a bit this weekend but won't have much time, probably won't be up until Tuesday though.

A separate judging thread is probably better

Are there official judges for this?

I didn't notice the thread until yesterday, but I'd be happy to judge the rosters.

I don't think we've figured out who all of them are yet, but we're working on it.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

*applause*

The rosters (although trades are still possible) are complete!

Great work all.

Now I get to toss a few names into the pot that did not get selected... my 'Forgo11EN'. Obviously none of these names will blow anyone away, just some more guys with talent that the draft couldn't fit.

In no particular order...

a) The ability of the in-ring announcer to hype the crowd is absolutely invaluable. While others were taking Ross or Solie or Cornette (all good picks, btw), I'm a bit surprised no one wanted a Howard Finkel or a Gary Capetta to give their fed an added boost once the customer is in the door.

b) The Z-Man, Tom Zenk, wrestled all over the world in the late 80's and early 90's, both as a tag parter (w/ Rick Martel in the WWF and Brian Pillman in WCW) and as a standout singles wrestler, wrestling multiple times for the AWA World Title and winning the WCW TV Title.

Zenk v. Ric Flair (1990)
The Fan Site

c) Gene Kiniski got his start in the 50's shortly after a knee injury ended his football aspirations. Just under 3 years into his career he got a shot at Lou Thesz' NWA World Title. He then competed in his native Canada, returned to the US to win the AWA World Title from Verne Gagne in 1961, and went on to hold the NWA World Title from '66 to '69. He was inducted in the inaugural class of the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame (1996). For more, click here for his wiki.

d) I'll admit, I was big on Harlem Heat back in the day, and honestly still think of Booker T as half of the 10-time WCW Tag Team Champs. So... why not pick the other half? Stevie Ray was the power behind the speed of his real life brother. Listed at 6'5", 292 lbs, he started his career later than most (31) but could keep up with anybody in the ring.

e) A forgotten talent (lost in the star power of the late 90's), Juan Rivera tried out for the WWE straight out of high school and was accepted, and sent to his homeland of Puerto Rico to train in their World Wrestling Council, feuding with Abdullah the Butcher and Carlos Colon Sr. Upon his return, he debuted as the masked martial artist Kwang. After a year or so, that was dropped in favor of his most well known persona, Savio Vega. Vega got to the finals of the 1995 King of the Ring (losing to Mabel), teamed with Razor Ramon, joined the Nation of Domination, and even led his own stable (Los Boricuas). He still competes all over Latin America and currently holds singles titles and tag titles in multiple promotions.

f) Of all the women picked in this draft, one glaring oversight stands out.

g) Of all the young blood that was picked, one thing stands out to me about all of them. They're fast. Really fast. Which is why it doesn't surprise me that this guy, who's just as new, wasn't sniffed out by anybody. He joined the WWE in April of 2008, and has already competed for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series. His background includes the 2005 USA Open Heavyweight Sambo Championship and the USKBA International Heavyweight Grappling Championship (Kick-boxing). He's also appeared on HBO's 'The Wire'. I offer you Vladimir Kozlov.

h) Patterson has been mentioned.

i) Nobody wanted Hornswoggle? Dink was taken but not Hornswoggle? At least Hornswoggle can wrestle!
And here's Hornswoggle owning the last pick in this draft.

j) The last pick in this draft should have been Barry Horowitz. 'Nuff said.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

This is the one person who I really, really wanted to take but couldn't:

(OK, technically this is two people, but one's ~500x more talented than the other.)

This wrestler is really one of the all-time best heels on the mic in their division. Would have definitely taken them if I hadn't thought of Russo at the very last second.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

Good draft. Maybe I'm biased, but I really, really like our roster. We don't have many good workers, but I think in terms of packing arenas, we'd be near the top. It's kind of like us drafting Vince shaped us to think like Vince. Big guys ftw.

And whoever drafted Vicki with the Rock is A+. Whoever Vicki was with against the Rock would produce the luls. Rock would be all over her in talk.

If I had been around and drafting the last 2-3 rounds, Pat Patterson would have been picked.

Sunny went too late :b

Love Coachman being Mr Irrelevant. That guy drew exceptional heat for a good stretch.

+1 thanks to Untouchable for running this so well, and to all involved for making this an awesome read.

Pat Patterson and Ray Stevens were on my short list in the last round.

So were Ken Patera, Gino Hernandez and Jimmy Garvin as well as a few tag teams- the Fantastics, Mr. Fuji & Mr. Saito and the Moondogs (as well as Steve Keirn and Dennis Condrey so I could have the Fabulous Ones and Midnight Express).

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

Wendi Richter should have gone ahead of a lot of women picked. She was genuinely selling out arenas in '84 and '85.

I would have also rated Sunshine very high for pure valets. Baby Doll too.

I looked into Patterson at one point and it didn't seem that he had any longevity as a wrestler at all. I'm not really sure how good his value is outside the ring, but I definitely didn't feel he was worth taking.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

I'm gonna be really busy for the next couple of days with finals week. If someone else wants to step up and figure out a way to get this judged and then start a thread for it that would be great. If not, I will get around to it next week when I get a chance.

Not sure how many people in this thread/draft know this, but Cena just lost the title to Sheamus.

I haven't watched any WWE this year, but I had to look up the title history and I noticed that this is the 9th title change this year. That doesn't include (obv) the 8 WHC title changes. Complete devaluation of championships complete?
