Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

I actually pretty surprised anyone from the "WWE in HD" era went before some of other undrafted guys out there.

Kofi's been doing some decent promos since he dropped the Jamaica gimmick.

Best Non-Wrestler 1996
Best on Interviews 1985-1988, 1993
Manager of the Year 1984-1990, 1992-1996
1996 Hall of Fame Inductee

Basically, the dude does everything but wrestle. Great on the mic, can do color commentary, awesome booker. Arguably better than Heyman, imo.
How meaningful are these awards though? If sports have taught me anything it's that every award given is basically meaningless. Is it different for Pro Wrestling?

I think that PWI/WON awards are generally a decent measure of someone's talent. I know that I've been using them a lot to help me draft. Best way to decide for yourself is to look at the era in which you watched wrestling and see if you agree with their awards for that era.

Why are there two picks missing in round 3?

Bubba was one of the best at drawing real heat on the mic, especially in ECW pre-censorship.

Believable badass too, it seemed at least possible at the time for Bubba to beat Taz in their impromptu Main Event match for the ECW World Title.

I'm not saying you're right or wrong, just that I don't know. Journalists are good for many things, but I think they've proven time in and time out that giving awards isn't their strong suit.

Calling the authors of those things "journalists" in that context is a bit off. This is not the BBWA or some other group of crusty ****s that don't actually watch the games. Trying to draw parallels between PWI and other sports awards doesn't really work.

Those "awards" need to be taken with a great deal of salt. If you look at Hogan's accolades on there you'd think he was one of the worst workers ever. I think they gave him worst worked match three different times.

Yeah it really seems like the goal of the people giving the awards is to point out overrated/underrated guys than to actually award it to the best.

Re: Professional Wrestling Promotion Draft

I looked back through the thread to sort it out.

45 (Wesrwood) Lex Luger
46 (deezy) Rey Mysterio Jr.
47 (Mikey) Stan Hansen
48 (b123) Booker T
49 (iggy) Bob Backlund
50 (mjw) Jeff Hardy
51 (Rhino) Honky Tonk Man

... and after that it appears to be accurate again.

4 matches. But in their defense those matches were some of the worst wrestling ever.

(1987) vs. André the Giant at WrestleMania III
(1996) with Randy Savage vs. Arn Anderson, Meng, The Barbarian, Ric Flair, Kevin Sullivan, Z-Gangsta, and The Ultimate Solution in a Towers of Doom match at Uncensored
(1997) vs. Roddy Piper at SuperBrawl VII
(1998) vs. The Warrior at Halloween Havoc

I just looked at PWI's best match of the year, HBK was in 9 of them, 4 of them being 2005-2008.

I can't really disagree with those choices for worst match.

Who cares? That didn't prevent Hogan from being the most popular wrestler of all-time.

Hogan/Warrior probably isn't a bad choice for 1990. I can't really think of any great WCW matches from that year. Rock/Hogan was probably the last time I ever marked out during a wrestling match, so no real complaints with that choice either. Obviously there were some better pure technical matches somewhere during those years, but atmosphere has to add something extra to put these over the top.

This. Also, all but one of those were in bazarro land WCW and we know how great the booking was there. Hogan/Andre was more of just "Look at how big we are when we stand in the ring face to face."

According to PWI, Hogan+Mr T vs Piper+Paul Orndorff (wtf), Hogan-Andre w/ the twin ref,Hogan vs Warrior at WM6, and Hogan vs Rock at WM18. Now PWI is more of a mark magazine while WON is a smark magazine, so PWI is basing it on more crowd reaction, but I agree with the last two as being great.

yeah, i think in this sense it's better to think of wrestling as a performance than a sport tbh. WON wrestler of the year is like an oscar for best actor, it focuses on the talent of the person more than the outcome of the story. PWI is the opposite.
