Incredible finish to a stage I think most (myself included) would've thought would be a simple day for the sprinters. But van Moer had other plans, but he was caught metres from the finish line and Mark Cavendish wins the sprint in style. Heartwarming to see how much it means to him, I love a good victory cry.

Afaik the story is pretty much that he was considered over the hill, hadn't won in ages before this year and almost had to end his career before Quickstep signed him to minimum salary last winter. People probably would have laughed in your face had you suggested at the start of the year that Cav would win a stage in the Tour. Also he's only here because Bennett is injured (or pretending to be injured if you believe Lefevre).

Sucks that he got caught with like 200m left, but if someone had to win instead I’m glad it was Cav. Either of those is a great story. If someone like say Bol or Colbrelli wins it’s just whatever.

Last time Cav was in the Tour was 2018. He was not brought to the Tour in the next few years because he wasn't riding very well and it looked like he would never even ride in the Tour again. Plus he's 36 years old.

So yeah, him actually getting to ride in the Tour and then winning a stage was almost an impossible dream for him.

Pretty much agree with all of the posts re stage 4. Cav obviously, as ct says, made a good move which lucked into really giving him a chance at stage wins.

Cav is great, ldo, and has been very fun to watch through his career, but I ultimately would prefer him to not get to Merck's record for Tour stage wins.

He struggled with recovering from Epstein-Barr virus and clinical depression ,had trouble getting a contract before DQS gave him one late , and he is only riding in the Tour due to Bennetts last minute injury.

Honestly if Porte doesn't pick up at least a minute on Carapaz and 30 seconds on Thomas given it is raining then he will be a domestique for the rest of the tour. This is his chance to reclaim the leadership from Carapaz as you would have to favour Porte in the rain with his ironman background.
