Those two things could not have less to do with each other.

Some people trying to remove all the "boring" stuff from sports and leave only the "exciting" stuff strikes me as the type of people who think Transformers is a great movie because it's just 2 hours of explosions and CGI, no boring stuff!

Interesting theory.

Making the goal posts two or three feet narrower would be great. 50 yd FGs shouldn't be a gimme.

If you want to make FGs harder to make, there are plenty of ways to do so without forcing teams to incur the expense of new goalposts. For example, you can just have the kicker spin around 12 times before the play.

NFL fines go to the player that was hit

Any kind of random variable is doomed to cause conspiracy theories of rigged games and very pissed off fans. Imagine a Patriots-Jets game where a random variable determines the winner on the last play. Any result will lead to many angry and unsatisfied fans.

Remember that part of the reason that FGs have been so successful this season is that coaches still basically don't kick from more than 52+ yards out unless they absolutely need to. I've seen multiple punts from inside the opponents' 40 yard line this season and I'm definitely not watching all the games. So even as kickers get better, coaches are still not using them right.

NFL should go to maybe 2 or 3 timeouts per game, when the rule of 6 was made there weren't constant TV timeouts and stopping play 6 or 7 times per game for reviews. Also when the rules were made spiking the ball wasn't allowed to stop the clock, you had to throw it in the vicinity of a receiver. With all the TV/official timeouts and being allowed to burn a down for clock stoppage anytime I'd say 2 per game each team is enough.

Had to look this up as I don't remember it ever being any different. Looks like spiking the ball to stop the clock became allowable under a new interpretation of the rules somewhere in the vicinity of 1993.

Rule I hate is that in college you can't advance a fumbled punt return. I don't see the reasoning for this.

fumbled or muffed?

Muffed punt. What is the reason this can't be returned for a TD?

I believe the reasoning is that by punting, a team is relinquishing possession to the receiving team. On a muff, the receiving team never actually gained possession.

In reality, it just seems like an archaic rule implemented when punt returners were terrible.

That's not just college btw. You can't advance a muff in the NFL either.

In the old days the quarterback would take the snap and immediately throw the ball straight out of bounds over a receiver. I assume he took an 0-1 in his passing stats, but I'm not sure.

NFL is finally wising up. In the future will use replay officials who are tech savvy.

no way.

Redzone means commercials don't suck anymore. being able to stop the clock at your choosing makes the game more exciting.

my (admittedly convoluted) idea.

for the last 4 weeks of the season, if you win one game, you get a free pick inserted directly after your draft position in the 7th round. If you win two games, that pick becomes a 6th round insertion; three games it's a 5th. If you sweep the final four games of the season it's a fourth rounder. (Or some variation on the above)

would do a good deal to eliminate tanking, would also prevent teams from resting players. would be a funny sub-plot. win win win win

Swaying goalposts for FGs would be good. The closer you are, the more they sway back and forth.

Eliminate punting would be awesome. Your offense can't move the ball? The other team gets the ball at your 25. Tough ****. It would make endgame situations much more exciting as well if a team that's losing by a single score gets a 4th down stop and they're already on the other teams half of the field.

There would just be a lot more high leverage situations imo.

If you kick a field goal and miss. You lose a point.
Might stop all this 4th and 2. "bring out the field goal unit crap".
