I think the NCAA "play-in" games should somehow incorporate a buffalo wing eating contest.

If the team scores the foul is assed and added or thrown out if it necessary. If there is a turnover or the ball goes out of bounds. Seems good on the surface, but what would really happen is that as soon as the ref raises his arm (or whatever) to indicate the delayed foul, the defense, still desperately needing to stop the clock and now having nothing to lose, would just collectively mug the ball carrier to get the ball back.

The inadvertent face slapping alone will be worth it

The 'play in game' should be as follows. There should only be one play in game or a play in playoff between the best four at-large teams left out of the tournament. I will name them team A, team B, team C, and team D. Team A plays Team B under normal rules but the team that reaches 20 points wins the game. That team stays on to play Team C. The winner of game 1 and Team C play to 20 points and the winner stays on. etc. until one team wins 5 five games and is crowned winner of the play in playoff.

Just like hockey. Give a second foul. The offense could potentially shoot 4 or more free throws once the play stops.

If you wanna fix the fouling in basketball, only option is to play to a certain score with no clock.

Like, ncaa play to 60 or 70 or something. Halftime break when someone gets halfway. NBA can play to 90 or 100. Quarters when someone gets to 25/50/75.

Have shot clock only, like 25/30 seconds. Keep everything else the same w fouls, though maybe add 6th personal to college.

A realistic rule change I'd like to see is the defense in football allowed to be more physical. Especially in the NFL, the wr have it easy compared to 20 years ago.

NFL: Every time a team punts, its head coach must remove an item of clothing.

college basketball: everytime your fans storm the court your win is voided.

An inventive way to decrease end of game fouling would be to reduce the shot clock and/or violation times. This would give the trailing team more incentive to catch up through strong defense. For example in the last 2 minutes shot clock is cut to 20 and backcourt is cut to 7 in the NBA...25 and 8 in college. Something like that.

It's an over-blown issue though. If guys make their ft's you still usually win. FT shooting is a good skill to emphasize. If guys can't shoot ft's it should be a significant negative. Basketball is supposed to be a total game not a game of specialists. Also, the amount of these fouls is over-blown especially in the NBA. The trailing team doesn't use more than a few possessions of this tactic very often at all.

every foul when you are down 7 or more points in the last minute is a technical

not gonna get rid of fouling to extend the game but ffs give it up when you are losing 75-65 with thirty seconds left

Does anyone disagree that the NCAA shot clock is way too long? Seems like moving it to 32 (to start) is a no-lose proposition.

Yes, it's too long.

HS should also add a shot clock. Five second violation is one of the worst applied calls in all of sports.

eta - and do away with the five second call in all leagues obv. shot clock/shorter shot clock until you feel you can get rid of it.

After every NFL game, the head coach must sign documents provided by math nerds that show the negative WPA of every punt and every other stupid decision they made. He must sign these documents and present them to the media after the game and explain his thoughts during the game, and why his math is so wrong, and what he plans to do about fixing how wrong he is.

These signed documents are then uploaded in PDF form and are available to the public, on the team's website.

If the head coach fails to sign the documents or explain each line item to the media, his game check is donated 50% to the math nerds (ohhhh boy it would really grind their gears to give those math nerds money!) and the other 50% is put into some fund that is then paid back to the fans at the end of the year.

Just curious, as I'm not a football guy really, but approximately what percentage of punts are bad plays? Is it like bunting in baseball, where the majority are?

Also, is there really a good reason the 2nd half of a basketball game doesn't start with a tip-off the same way the first half does?

I think this is a cool idea. Defensive teams would be forced to fight out longer games, which would be taxing but the battles would be fun to watch. Offensive win fast teams get shorter but more action games. Seems fun either way.

If you wanna get rid of late-game fouling without dramatically adjusting things, just make it so that after time runs out, the leading team has to make one more shot to win the game. Any shot. That way the trailing team always has a chance to come back without fouling.

Probably about 80% of them are wrong. But since 100% of coaches mess them up multiple times a game, nobody really notices.

It would be like if every team in MLB sacrificed an out to get a runner to "scoring position" multiple times a game. Hugely wrong but not a big deal since nobody would really be capitalizing.
