Lol Canada. Plays like that seem super fluky and high variance IMO.

touchbacks are a point for the opposing team in Canadian football

That happens about as often as a successful Hail Mary. Not a typical play, but I do love when teams line up a kicker in the end zone to kick out the missed field goal.

Why do they have to kick out a missed FG? If they don't, it's a point for the other side?

Also, I would love the NFL to have bigger end zones. But not that big.

yes, like Krayz said touchbacks are worth 1 point for the kicking team, so given the game was tied with no time left the defending team had to get it out of their endzone to force OT, and if you can't run it out then you gotta kick it out

yeah endzones are 20 yards, so more room for creativity down in the redzone

A missed field goal that is kicked through or downed in the end zone is worth one point. The receiving team can run it out or kick it out to avoid the kicking team from scoring the single (called a rouge).

Can you kick the ball forward like the kicker for the Alouettes did when he got the ball back on any play? Looks rugbyish to a noob like me.

No, your offense isn't on the field in either system. That's the whole point. The only difference is that in the new system, your defense would be on the field instead of the hands team for one play.

worst rule in the NFL is that two professional teams can tie. Play till one team scores and holds the other team..

I consider myself way more than a casual fan and I hate it immensely--I just think it's too fundamental of a change. Oddly, I do kind of like the idea of having a scrum to determine initial possession at the beginning of halves/OT, mainly because it replaces a silly luck-based element (coin toss)...that would eliminate a couple of kickoffs per game, at least.

No way. The worst rule is tie breakers to determine post season seeding. Ties during the season allows for more unique outcomes. Deceases the chances of ties for seeding.

The NFL wants to end kickoffs. What's the injury rate during kickoffs? Is it much higher than during normal plays?

How do you propose to seed tied teams without some sort of tiebreaker?

Now that people have 60" inch flat screens, the default HD angle really needs to be from behind the quarterback so we can actually watch the routes develop downfield instead of just seeing the WR and DB come into frame 1 second before the ball reaches them. Would make the NFL 5x more watchable IMO. I'd go so far as to say that if either the NCAA or the NFL adopted this as the go-to camera angle, I'd pretty much watch that league exclusively until the other one followed suit.
ohhhhhhhh wow i never even thought of that, and im a pretty big fan of endzone seats. its not just the downfield stuff either, its much better for watching speedy RBs trying to turn the corner, WRs playing along the sidelines, screen plays where you can tell who actually has an angle on the ball carrier, etc. the angle of the sideline view kind of squishes the field and distorts depth perception.

+1 million

someone start a twitter campaign or email bill simmons or something

I think that's a necessary evil (unless you want to have some high-variance mini-game between tied teams, where you just play a college-style OT or something). I think neg3sd's point is just that there's a very limited number of possible records, which is why ties are actually good (I liked the idea of an 18-game season for the same reason). It kinda sucks when there are five or six 10-6 teams in a conference, and half the berths/seeding are determined just by tiebreaker.

I agree, I'd love to see this angle broadcast to be able to see into the secondary downfield. The advantages for game analysis are clear.

But, this angle would also disappoint in certain spots. For example, when a RB gets in behind the OL will block the shot. A lot of DL play will be shielded by the OL. And, the ball running away from the camera effect. It doesn't capture the speed of the players.

And, unless you have the capability to get wide angle and do everything from the Sky Cam, you run into the issue of feasibility. The goalposts and blocking the view from fans in the stadium are the 2 big obstacles. Time to invent a self-stabilizing flying camera imo.

You absolutely need tie breakers. Allowing ties during the regular season games would create more possible outcomes, less need to use the tie breaker rules. One win should be worth more than two ties.

This year there may be a three-way tie in the AFC for 2-4 seed.

Thanks, nice graph. Seems like injuries are trending up for all plays other than field goals. Players are getting bigger and stronger. They need to change the rules on tackling. No throwing the body like a missile into the player with the ball. Arms must be away from the body(your own body).

A CFL rule I would like to see is the onside punt.

There is no fair catch in the CFL, but the kicking team has to give the returner a 5 yard bubble.

The good part of no fair catch or downing punts is that the punter and anyone lined up behind him at the time of the kick is onside, so they can recover the ball.

Makes for some pretty interesting gadget plays on offense as well.

Why did the Alouettes try a field goal? Why didn't they just punt it into the stands through the end zone for 1 point?

They may have been down by one, so the single would only tie. If the game was tied, that would be a solid start.

I just realized that CFL rules probably seem like a huge level to people who didn't grow up with then.
