Technically a "muffed" punt is like that, still a terrible rule imo. If you complete the catch and then fumble and recover in our own endzone it's a saftey.

It presents great angle shooting opportunities as is. If you muff a punt inside the 10 yard line you can bat it into the endzone and then recover it for a touchback, which is pretty much exactly what happened tonight.

Not sure if the NFL rules are different.

Contract the idiots that came up with this rule

I think in college football if the receiver makes a diving catch he should be able to get up and run

no

the one thing football needs to change is that a punt touched by a member of the return team who isnt trying to field the ball should not be a fumble and instead just be downed at that spot. you shouldnt get rewarded by shanking a punt 25 yards and it bouncing back into a blocker.

its a silly exception unless you just want everyone to have to be down by contact like the nfl

Agreed. Why just diving catches? What's the difference between diving and stretching, then stumbling? The college rule is clear cut. So is the pro rule. Mixing and matching will not work.

You guys are probably right. It just annoys me when a guy is wide open and makes a diving catch and the play is over

It is in place because these are amateurs not pros. Players trying to get up and getting their ACL torn apart because they get crushed. Not going to happen under the watch of the NCAA.

I like what dkgojackets says on the punt.

If a game ends with a safety you still need to free kick the ball to the other team

I don't like this.

Say it is a short punt and the returner has to sprint up field to catch it in the air. At the last moment he realizes he won't get there and veers to the side as the ball bounces and hits him, should that be ruled down when the returner touches it?

fixed dkgo's post to make it more clear. Agree bailing at the last minuted and having the ball touch you should be a muff.

I like the NCAAF OT rules I just think they should start them back further maybe the 40 or 50 yd line.

I would eliminate FGs and XPs completely in football.

even without that clarification you could rule that sprinting up the field to get under the ball is making an effort at fielding it so fumble

its pretty ridiculous to gain 30 yards and possession because of a lucky bounce on a bad punt when the other team didnt do anything wrong

Since they auto review all this stuff now. They need to add personal fouls to it. Just have a referee upstairs overturn the call in the field. If Pittsburgh player hadn't dropped that easy pick in the end zone it would've been overturned due to an awful penalty. Giants get new set of downs and score.

Seriously, change it. Luck had a 2 INT game tonight. Jaguars ball on the 15. Not Colts ball on the 50 resulting in a td.

That is the one moment on a football field a guy is truly unprotected. That is why this penalty hits so hard. Although, some roughing calls have been horrific bad. Can't breathe on QB's now without getting the flag.

Pass Interference should be reviewable. There should also be different severities of PI. Blatant PI should be spot foul. Accidental PI should be 10 yards 1st down.

Offensive PI needs to be a bigger penalty. There is to much PI on purpose when the defense is going to intercept. It should be 10 yards and loss of down. Currently there is no loss of down.

I don't think there's any way you can take something that's already a judgment call and make it reviewable. Plus, I'm assuming both PI calls and lack thereof would be challenged; I know the coaches only have 3 each (max), but imagine the last 2 minutes of a game when the trailing team is throwing every down and they have to look at virtually every play. Enjoy your 5 hour games.

What I was thinking is it would only be reviewable if they throw a flag. If there is no flag there is not review. I'm getting tired of watching huge penalties for 30+ yards where there was no PI.

Excessive celebration penalty on a TD that gets reversed still being applied after reversal of TD play.
