counter-offer for way more fun: all punts should be live, but can't be caught in the air by the kicking team

this has probably been said before, maybe even by me, but its my biggest pet peeve.

in ALL sports, only players currently on the field should be able to call timeouts. get rid of all these coach called timeouts.

yes to punt rules... like an onside kick, but better.

Replace pitchers with pitching machines.

Use soccer rules to manage fouls and timekeeping in the NBA.

That basically was the XFL rule for punts.

NBA: players are assessed technical fouls for not shimmying after a made three-pointer.

Won't happen as the NBA likes high scoring, but remove the corner 3 (3 point line stays at 23.75 feet all the way around).

This will reduce the number of 3s per game and will help bring back the mid-range game as the lane won't be so wide open.

NBA the court should be bigger, all lines moved back, and raise the rim at least 6".

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that the NBA should do everything to increase scoring.

Add a couple digits to every score. 3 pointers now count as 300 points, free throws count as 100 points, etc.

Add a 400 point line close to half court.

Add additional baskets on top of the current one, just like in the MTV rock n' jock games. 2nd tallest basket gives a 2x mutliplier, and the tallest gives a 3x multiplier.

A player could score a whopping 1200 points in a single shot with these rules.

2400 max, if you get the shot to go through all three baskets, obviously.

nba: if you fumble the ball while trying to pick up your dribble (and touch it with two hands), and then recover after it bounces, make that a double dribble.

That non PI call vs the Saints got me thinking.

That non call didn't matter b/c the Saints couldn't challenge it. For all the calls coaches can't challenge, there should be a ref in a box watching the game w/ a TV so if he sees something that can't be challenged by either team, he can overrule the call on the field. Or he can at least send it to NYC where the league can review it.

Basically, any call on the field the coaches can challenge, the ref upstairs can't. Any call the coaches can't challenge, the ref upstairs can challenge.

Take that call vs the Saints into account. The Saints can't challenge something the refs on the field didn't see. But the ref in the box can easily see it was a ****ed up call. He calls for a review. Saints get the 1st down.

NFL overtime:

both offenses get the ball at the opposing 30 and run plays at the same time. first to score a TD wins.

This is amazing. Turnovers end the possession and results in the focus shifting to the other end until that offense either scores or misses a FG?

Each team gets the ball at the 30. Both agree to do the same play. So the coin flip decides whom goes first. Like HORSE. If the team that wins the coin flip passes, runs, passes, runs and scores a TD, the opposing team has to try to score by passing, run, passing running and scoring a TD.

How about just a HORSE competition to your WRs? No-look, side-armed, left-handed, 70 yard bombs - all valid. I love it!

NFL overtime:

When time runs out in regulation, why don't they just keep playing (sudden death)?

Bad idea. Whatever team has the ball has unlimited time for their final drive. Now the other team doesn't even get the ball if a FG is kicked. That's worse than the current coinflip advantage. Apart from being unfair it also takes a lot of the excitement out of the game.

The best NFL OT idea I've heard is to run successive 2 pt conversions until one team fails and the other team succeeds. Probably most optimal time-wise because they are about 50/50, no team has a material advantage going first/last, no kicker, and there are multiple plays in the playbook so that run-happy teams can still do their thing.

It also helps that 2 pt conversions are the natural way to break ties in regulation.
