I agree with that.

What about if you injure a player for multiple weeks? Career-ending injury? I feel like the penalties should be commensurate. Similar to the “eggshell plaintiff” theory.

In addition to the anthem, they should stop doing god bless america at baseball games

I presume the other leagues get paid for all that by the DOD just like the NFL does.

Having shot clock violations be a dead ball turnover when the offense doesn’t have possession of it remains a terrible rule

I look forward to a situation like 2014 when two western teams host the championship rounds.

Also, the AFC and NFC alternate between the early and late slot (and thus CBS and FOX alternated betweeen the two) so yep, 10am Los Angeles Rams at home game next year sounds mint.

Seems ok. A great long day of drinking after the game. Ofc would hurt the people who get pissed before the game even starts.

NFL

Saints are up 43-19. 1st & 10. Offense has the option to run 2:00 off the clock and offense goes to 4th & 10. Would help with preventing injuries in blowout games.

Might as well just have the option to forfeit when things get out of hand. If you bet the underdog with points, oh ****ing well, you don't deserve it. If you bought a ticket, congrats you get to go home early.

Offense basically does have this option if they want to do 3 QB kneels.

But if the defense is coached by Greg Schiano then there's a big possibility for injuries.

This is basically the equivalent of the intentional walk now in MLB. Speed up the inevitable. Sure teams could fumble (and they do), but is it worth all the injuries that happen when the game is essentially over? No.

Has a team ever in the history of football taken a knee with 9 minutes remaining in a blowout game? I doubt it.

And I kinda hate the automatic intentional walk anyway. I think that both that and kneeldowns should have to be executed, even if there's only a .001 chance a team ****s it up and something interesting happens. Besides, skipping it makes it confusing as hell for someone who doesn't know the game ("So wait, why was that guy getting ready to hit and then just went to first?" "Why was the clock at 1:53 and then they made it 0:00 and everybody's running onto the field shaking hands?" "Sports are stupid.")

NFL: Allow handchecks at the line of scrimmage, allow players to tackle the quarterback. The result will be to force teams to run the ball more, much less wide open passing with the quarterback isolated far from the line, and a consequent decrease in the boring Falcons style games consisting of trading touchdowns until someone fumbles.

I think that if a team in the lead in the 4th quarter commits an offensive penalty, the clock should stop. Too often I've seen a team commit a holding penalty on 1st down, and essentially get an extra play to run clock. The defensive team then has to use a timeout on that (non)-play, and then after 1st and 2nd down, leaving 3rd down for the leading team to run clock.

1. MLB use only 8 defensive players. Addition of DH makes 9 hitters, including pitcher.

2. Any team ahead by 2+ runs after 7+ full innings is declared winner.

This would keep the game interesting for the next 20+ years, until analytics goes to the next level.

I thought the clock did stop on a penalty like that

It stops in the last 5 minutes (and last 2 minutes of the 2nd quarter). The rest of the game the clock runs again on the referee's ready signal, assuming it would have been running if the penalty hadn't happened.

Maybe it does in NFL, but not college. Purdue vs Northwestern this year. 1st and 10 NW. Purdue with all 3 timeouts. 1st down play from about Purdue's 25 or 30, holding penalty. At that spot on the field you have to back them up so they did. Clock ran, Purdue has to call timeout. Still 1st down, call timeout again and then again on 2nd down. 3rd down they ran down the clock.

Other things happened that didn't let Purdue win (awful personal foul penalty) but even without it, the time situation would have made a comeback nearly impossible.

I’ve looked into the clock thing because I thought it could be a good loophole to start running clock in the 3rd quarter. Apparently the referee can make a judgement call to stop the clock if they feel a team is doing it purposely.

1st and 10 clock stopped
Run for 9 yards , take 40 seconds off the clock
2nd and 1 - false start, take another 25 seconds off
2nd and 6 - run for 5 yards, take 40 seconds off the clock
3rd and 1 - false start, take 25 seconds off the clock
3rd and 6 - run the ball, 40 seconds off the clock

You can basically take burn an extra minute just from 2 offensive penalties. Why don’t teams use that more often.

Well now they have a 3rd and 6 whereas they would have easily gotten a 1st otherwise and had 3 more downs to run clock.

In college you don’t need a 1st down to run the clock out though. If there is 3 minutes left that’s how you run out the clock without a first down.

every punt should be ruled dead at the point it touches any player (past the line of scrimmage) other than the returner. its really stupid for terrible shanked punts to hit some guy in the back of the leg and end up being a massive swing in the game
