That's not the point. You could put a speed skating contest in and it would still be exciting because it's the ****ing playoffs.

lol at anybody who actually likes the shootout.

Really dumb.

And somehow you top it.

Why don't we just have commercial breaks between every batter? That way games could be 6 hours long, so we get twice as much baseball!

A question related to this: if the offensive is at the 6 yard line, and the defensive commits a 5 yard penalty, the ball goes to the 1. But if they commit a 10 yard one, it goes to the 3 ('half the distance to the goal'). Is this correct?

watch another sport. the cat/mouse between hitter and pitcher is part of beisbol, both wanting to dictate and/or control pace.

thinman's sorta right imo. you don't watch baseball for the pace of it, at it's core, it's an incredibly slow moving and boring game. you watch for the long hours of boredom and few seconds of excitement, and for talking about plays in between, and the general awesome experience of drinking beer/watching the game or being at a ballpark and all that comes with that. the time length is perfect, ~3 hours on average.

trying to speed up the process would probably make it lame.

Whatever the "penalty near the goal" rule it shold be the same for both sides of the ball. For example it's dumb that offsides is penalized half the distance, but false start is penalized 5 yards.

The current rule? All penalties are a maximum of half the distance to the goal except for defensive pass interference.

ETA: A spot foul against the offense in its own endzone is a safety.

A shootout after 1 or 2 OTs in hockey isn't a terrible idea.

Overtime playoff hockey is great and all but those guys are gassed and the quality of play is really ****ty after 2 overtimes. Everyone's legs are just gone. It's basically dudes gasping for air and missing on short range passes and ****, waiting for some funny hop or somebody to fall down for a 2 on 1 or something.

I don't think they should change hockey but brandon's post isn't as bad as people are making it sound, if implemented after 1 or 2 OTs. These triple OT games are pretty WOAT to watch though. You're only watching b/c you don't want to miss the goal and have no idea when it will happen. But the game quality sucks. And all goons are already out of the game.

dumb idea: regular season hockey OT: 1st - 4on4, 2nd - 3on3.....5th - Goalie fight

has anyone said that defensive holding in the nfl should be five yards and replay the down instead of an automatic first? because it really needs to happen.

They're experimenting with 3 on 3 in the ahl I believe

Quality of play is obviously bad after a few extra periods but shootouts are super boring as well especially since in a high pressure situation no player will try a creative or risky (read: exciting) move due to the back lash it would create from stupid fans/coaches/talking heads. So its a few rounds of wrist shots five hole.

Both situations are ones that people would turn off if it was a game in February, but has a redeeming quality the stakes it is at

But this is the easiest way for the refs to rig for the Ravens, Stealers, and Pats.

The problem is that it would become +ev in particular situations to hold.

you can probably still do that. when was the last time a team without top-5 vegas odds preseason won the championship?

nhl

make the net bigger by adding another foot of space above the crossbar. keep the current crossbar and any shots that go in above the lower crossbar are 2 goals.

not anymore than offensive holding. if it is a problem then 10 yards and replay the down might be enough.

the dumbest 1st down in football is when a team has like 3rd and 24 and gets a free first because of holding 8 yards downfield.

When is offensive holding +EV??? When it prevents a sack that would have been for more than 10 yards?

even if it's less than 10 yards replaying the down minus 10 yards is usually better than losing both yards and the down. also sacks can generate fumbles and pressure can lead to an interception.

tbh though holding is probably almost always +ev since there's a good chance the refs won't call it.

1st and 20 is way better than 2nd and 15-20 imo.

WRT length of game in baseball, just letterbox the ****ing tv broadcasts and put all of the advertising on a crawl across the bottom. Never break for commercials, and when the pitcher is ready, start the next inning.

Even regular season games have like 2 minutes+ mandated between half-innings. I've seen pitchers throw like 5 pitches and then they stand around waiting for the commercial break to end (ie, the umpire saying OK let's go).

If they would leave it to the natural pace of the game, there would be 1-2 minutes less time consumed between each half inning, shaving a half-hour off the game without affecting the actual play at all.

There's a big difference between that and how often defensive holding could/would be even if you unfairly assume defensive holding is called 100% of the time it happens

then you can make it and illegal contact ten yards but not an auto first

Extra timeouts in football can be used at the cost of 1 down. Will effectively eliminate spiking which will make for more opportunities to come back late in game.

This has exciting implications and I would love it if for no reason other than to see which coach takes an extra timeout on a crucial 4th and 4 to talk it over.
