Some teams will hit that 6 kick limit every game. But most will be lucky to reach it a couple of games per season. But interesting.

6 kick idea is very interesting. I don't think you need to make them free kicks, because seeing kicks blocked is awesome, but the idea that you can only punt, kick FGs or XPs six times in a game is interesting, would open the game up, add another layer of strategy.

It would make the games really boring because bad teams would just get destroyed

The bad coaching decisions thread would break the Internet. Close your eyes and imagine some of these guys blowing their kicks on punts from inside the 50.

He would have gotten a 15 yard penalty, been ejected, banned from the NFL for life, and gone to jail, but they still would have reviewed the TD.
A+

If there were a 6 kick limit, teams would go for 2 every time, with the exception of late game strategy. Putting them up 7 or 8 (like in the example above, using the final kick to go up 9 would be a no brainer).

I guess I don't care either way. Interesting idea anyway.

in the NFL, they should switch the default camera angle to SKY CAM

It's not actually a rule change, but don't get me started on how awful the NFL camera angles are. They came up with the whole "zoom in on the line and the QB from the side" angle back when teams ran the ball 60% of the time and the average TV was a 14 incher. Now that people have 60" inch flat screens, the default HD angle really needs to be from behind the quarterback so we can actually watch the routes develop downfield instead of just seeing the WR and DB come into frame 1 second before the ball reaches them. Would make the NFL 5x more watchable IMO. I'd go so far as to say that if either the NCAA or the NFL adopted this as the go-to camera angle, I'd pretty much watch that league exclusively until the other one followed suit.

BTW, I kinda like the Goodell/Schiano idea. Onside kicks were always so random. Just a weird skill that only comes up once in several games that doesn't have much to do with the general flow of the game. Wouldn't it be more exciting watching Peyton Manning down 13 with 5:00 if you knew that the ball wasn't getting taken out of his hands until the defense stopped him on a 4th and 15? Hell, make it a 4th and 10. Would just be so much more epic when the offense single-handedly made the epic comeback than having to rely on the luck of the ball bouncing right on an onside kick.

Yeah because having a good offense yourself deserves to be punished by not being able to run out the clock.

It's not like the offense can run out the clock any better under the current system. You could always blow a 2-possession lead with the other team going TD, onside kick, TD. It's just that in this case, the random special teams play in the middle is replaced by a random defensive play with about the same probabilitites.

I like Schiano's proposal. Takes a lot of the variance out of the game and adds a skill element to executing a comeback late in the game. I really, really like it

If you consider an onside kick random I guess.

I'm just saying random in the sense that it's a lot of leverage put on a single play relative to the other plays. I don't think you're getting the point though. The point is that the offense still needs the one high-leverage play to go their way to run out the clock in the current system just like they would in the new system.

CFL timing rules are far superior to NFL imo. Essentially extends the final few minutes of the halves. Should be the standard rule.

I like Schiano's idea, also, however I doubt it ever flies. I think the 'casual' fan would hate it.

You'll have to explain them. Since I'm guessing 95% of this thread has never watched a single play of a CFL game.

its really insane to me that not one single TV producer has tried this out.
have none of them played madden?

+10000

tho i imagine the players association would fight this tooth and nail as it would eliminate a bunch of roster spots (or do basically the same guys play on punt coverage/return as the kick off squads?)

Fair enough. The following does a pretty good job in the timing rules section.

except in 1 system (current) your offense is on the field in the high leverage situation and in the other system your defense is on the field.
