So after rich kotite, bill parcells comes in and all the Jets have to do to make the playoffs is win at the Lions. The Jets blow a 10-0 lead but are only down 13-10 and have driven the ball in the middle of the 4th quarter to a first and goal from the 9. What play do you call coach? Go conservative to make sure you have a short field goal? Go all out for the win you need to make the playoffs?

Or go full TRICK PLAY?

Yep, they called a halfback pass! It was intercepted, the second interception not by the starting quarterback in Lions FG range in the game.

The Jets did later get the ball back but inevitably punted on 4th and 26 with just over 2 minutes left to a team who had Barry Sanders at running back and that was that.

Tom Cable, Raiders Chiefs 2008. Cable's best known for Seattle's OL coach, somehow those guys get paid by other teams despite not really blocking the guy in front of them often but good for him. Cable was Raiders HC at the time.

In this gem, Raiders are lining up for a 43 yd FG, and Cable has called for a fake.

Well fake field goals get called and fail all the time, so why is this one special and worthy of this thread?

What could he have called?

It's fourth and 10 so surely you'd call Seabass running for a first down.

wait, what? Yes, the play is called for the not as fat then but still not fleet of foot kicker to run 10 yards from LOS after getting the flip from the punter between the punter's legs. Ten plus the six where the holder is + a few where he is all to get there against NFL defenders. Yes, Seabass. Yes, a NFL coach decided the biggest kicker in the league could convert a 4th and 10 by running for it.

Instead, the whole thing got botched and the Chiefs ended up with the ball and returned it for a touchdown. So instead of 6-3 oak, it's 10-3 chiefs.

Fortunately for the Raiders this didn't matter in the outcome, as the Chiefs won 20-13.

If someone finds this on youtube, link it in here, I couldn't find it.

Brian Kelly killing Declan Sullivan was pretty stupid. Maybe don't send a kid up in a horribly constructed scissor lift in 50 mph winds?

you could write a book on marvin lewis but this one stood out. bungles were fighting for the playoffs and would make it with a win over the steelers in week 17. steelers were already eliminated.

unfortunately, they were playing like crap, but late in the 4th qtr the bengals get a td to take the lead 17-14. theres 2:47 left.

at the time the bengals had a lethal offense with carson palmer, tj housh, ocho cinco, and chris henry. but the defense was atrocious, so it was a lock that the steelers would score.

with 1:07 left and the clock stopped the steelers line up for a field goal from 35 yards away.

Marvin Lewis CALLS TIMEOUT. yes, in a 1 minute game, with an awesome offense, he called timeout to ice the kicker.

but, it gets better. with 50s left, palmer completes a 47 yard bomb to chris henry all the way to the steelers 20 yard line. hey Marv, wouldnt it be nice to have 2 timeouts here rather than 1?

no mind, marvin still refuses to call timeout. the clock goes all the way down to 23 sec and palmer spikes the ball.

ya, no reason to get any closer to the end zone.

anyway, with the CLOCK STOPPED, marvin calls his LAST TIMEOUT.

palmer kneels again. then spikes.

ofc they brick the fg and lose in overtime and miss the playoffs.

just an insane amount of mistakes there. obv wasting a precious timeout to ice a kicker is idiocy. then, with one of the best offenses in the league, refusing to try to get any closer than the 20 yard line with ~40s and a timeout left. I mean, ocho made a living on precise routes to the sideline.

ya settle for a 37 yard fg in pittsburgh in december when the field was a mess.

This is a good one and probably as close as a hockey coach can get to these other atrocities (which still isn't that close, hockey just doesn't have the opportunity for a coach to mess up the way football and baseball do).

However, did want to point out the failure to pull the goalie at the end doesn't qualify as panicking here. The soviets were well established non believers in pulling the goalie at that time. No Russian coach would have done it there, it wasn't unique to Tikhonov. Even now in international play russians don't pull the goalie as soon as they "should" (according to most stats guys).

That was Nebraska vs Miami. That was a badass move. Only problem I have is passing, they had an unstoppable ground game that year.

No Les Miles? May I present his performance in the final 30 seconds of the Ole Miss game in 2009? Calls TO with :09 left, after letting 20 seconds run off at the 50 yard line down 25-23. Completes a pass to inside the 10 with 1 second left. Spikes the ball to end the game.

Came here specifically to post Miracle on Ice. Writeup wouldn't have been anywhere near that good.

Another one which was basically the exact opposite -- Mario Tremblay leaves Patrick Roy in for nine goals against the Red Wings.

Note the sarcastic cheer the Forum crowd gave following an easy save, and Roy's reaction to it. This ended up being Roy's last game in Montreal, which he made clear to team president Ronald Corey as he left the ice, not looking once at Tremblay. Roy, of course, was traded to Colorado within a week, where he would win two more Stanley Cups in addition to the two he'd literally carried the Habs to already. Montreal hasn't been back to the final since.

Let's go with one that happened almost 20 years ago.

The 1998 Winter Olympics were in Nagano, Japan and Canada featured a strong hockey team (as you might expect). Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman and Eric Lindros were just a few of the stars for team Canada. Oh, and they also had some guy named Wayne Gretzky on the roster as well.

In the semi-finals, the Canadian team faced off against the Czech Republic. The game was a showdown between the goaltenders with future Hall of Famers, Patrick Roy facing off against Domink Hasek.

Trevor Linden tied the game late in the 3rd for Canada and the game went to a shootout. Marc Crawford, coach of team Canada had to pick 5 shooters to go up against the nearly unbeatable Domink Hasek.

His choices were Theo Fleury, Joe Nieuwendyk, Eric Lindros, Brenden Shanahan and Ray Bourque. All fine choices (though Bourque was a slightly wtf choice given he was a defenceman).

However, you might notice that the name WAYNE GRETZKY is missing from that list. That's right, the GOAT hockey player of all time was not selected to shoot for Canada in the decisive shootout.

Hasek stopped all five Canadian shooters, the Czech's went on to win gold behind a golden generation of great players. Canada flamed out in the Bronze medal game to go home empty handed.

tldr: Wayne Gretzky left on bench for Canada in decisive shootout.

Wasn't it that game where he said in the presser afterwards that his plan was to hit 20 running plays in the second half? That definitely needs to be in any writeup of this, the worst whole-game coaching performance OAT.

Gretzky was 37 years old and only score 23 goals the previous season. Was this really that bad of a decision?
