nah, it's one of the most overblown things in hockey lore imo.
you're quite right that Gretzky was old and washed up by that point, he retired the following year. and he also was notoriously bad on breakaways during his career (think he even admitted as much during his prime).
of course Gretzky didn't help matters at all by pouting on the bench like a baby back *****, really hanging Crawford out to dry. think he's carried on like that ever since. i get being a competitor and getting mad about it, but come on.
plus it wouldn't have mattered, nobody was beating Hasek those days, dude was an absolute animal.
and in that 1998 Olympic tournament:
stopped 17/17 shots vs Finland
21/23 shots vs Kazakhstan
29/31 shots vs Russia
38/39 shots vs USA (quarterfinal)
29/30 shots vs Canada, and 5/5 in the shootout (semifinal)
20/20 shots vs Russia (final)
so just 154/160 in the tournament for a 0.99gaa & .963sv%
(0.65gaa & .979sv% in the knockout round)
also, 1 goal in that spot would have just brought us even in the shootout, not won the damn game.
and we shot first.
(and then we got wrecked by something called Ari Sulander in the bronze medal game, sure forgot about that one... lol)
