do you feel there is a significant, fundamental difference between qbs that causes some to have a higher percentage of tipped passes picked off than others? would love to see the work on that if so but for now I'm going with that stuff evening out over a large sample

I'd imagine that with a bad O-line you'd be more likely to have your pass tipped at the line of scrimmage, and bad receivers would be more likely to have the ball bounce out of their hands and into the hands of a defender. I have no idea how big an effect those things would be though. I'd think most INTs are clean.

that impact seems microscopic compared to what having a good oline and good receivers on every other pass does for your numbers

What if I told you that Mike Mayock was no longer doing Thursday night game and was being replaced by Simms and Nantz?

Says who?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...twork/5227869/

The lead CBS broadcast team of play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and analyst Phil Simms will call all 16 games under the agreement, which the league announced Wednesday, culminating months of speculation about the NFL selling an additional package of games.

Simms is not much of an upgrade

I know this isn't a popular opinion, but Mayock >> Simms.

Understatement imo. Mayock is good, Simms is actually the worst broadcaster alive.

Mayock is fine. Simms is bleh.

I hate Simms on Showtime but he's far less awful when calling games. And Nantz won't shy away from pointing out when he's wrong.

I find Mayock completely unbearable anymore. Nantz is totally fine.

This news pleases me greatly.

Mayock is both awful and basically arguably 3rd best behind Collinsworth and Gruden (and on par with Moose imo).

It's kinda amazing how much better random ESPN/CBS/Fox color CFB guy is than the NFL guys.

He'd be the best guy out there if he did the following:

1) Reduce his number of words spoken by about 30%
2) Fix that lisp
3) Never mention high school football, College football, the combine, the East-West Shrine Game, height, weight, 40 times, the SEC, and draft position ever again about anybody.
4) Never say "I talked to so and so before the game..." anymore.

Problem is this will never happen.

When he breaks down plays he's good. And he brings an exciting voice to the broadcast. I also loved his call on BEEF MOE's famous run against the Saints a couple years ago. Everything else is over-the-top smothering.

Simms says some dumb things and is very flip floppy about calls but he doesn't smother you with his personality. He does that on Showtime though.

Mayock has a brain. Phil Simms does not have a brain. No overuse of height/weight statistics can override that gap.

You guys would hate whoever calls the games no matter what so discussing this is pretty silly

That's the main thing a color guy is supposed to do and he does it better than Simms. I'll take the bad (draft combine results for every player in the game) with the good.

Meh I've said I've liked Mayock. Does he over do it? Of course. But he has knowledge of something and passes it on. I get it that people aren't into the draft and interested in the combine and stuff so all those numbers are just noise. But I will always enjoy someone that has information to give rather than the random nonsense of drivel that many seem to spew.

Gannon has never bothered me and I love him on the radio. Boomer does a good job on national radio calls. Kevin Burkhardt and John Lynch have a lot of potential to not be annoying(Burkhardt is a huge sabremetrics guy for baseball so I imagine the more football he does he will push stuff that many on this board like to hear).

Simms is truly garbage as is Ian Eagle. Overall though I have little problems with broadcasters as its background noise to the product on display. I mean for me personally Buck's monotone voice is at the point that I can't remember one thing he said during the superbowl because its so easy to ignore.

Nope. I love Michaels & Collinsworth. No better PBP guy alive than Michaels, and Collinsworth actually helps you understand the game better when he breaks down plays, especially because he tends to focus on things other than the ball carrier.

I prefer the announcers who focus on the ball carrier. It makes it easier for them to either commend the offense for running the football or excoriate the offense for not running the football.

I like Gruden though I get why some people find him annoying.

I've seen Mayock, Collinsworth and Gruden all bring some good knowledge at times. Simms is just an idiot.

I already said he's good at breaking down plays. Outside that, I don't value the "I can memorize numbers" part of his brain, and his incessant need to prove this. If he used his brain to point out every time a coach did something monumentally wrong or dumb I would agree that the good would outweigh the bad at that point. As it stands, no, imo.

Bull****. I like plenty of guys. Gruden, Nantz (everyone hates him - I don't get it), Gus, Michaels, Nessler, etc. Others. Didn't like Tirico much especially with his incessant need to spoil sporting events but he's growing on me now that he calls out coaches for being dumb and games for being awful. I respect that.
