Is polevaulter Duplantis the most dominant athlete in sports history? Is polevaulter Duplantis the most dominant athlete in sports history?

I just checked betting markets (bet365) for the olympics and swedish-american polevaulter Armand Duplantis is 1.03 (-3333) to win the gold lol. Is he the most dominant athlete in the history of all sports? As far as being a current betting favorite to win large event goes.

I know for example Mayweather has a ridiculous record of wins after the fact, but he was never close to this much of a favorite going into a match was he?

Fact.
Bubka used to beat his world record in 1cm increments so he could get the bonus for a new world record every time.

Don’t forget Ed Moses. Between 1977 and 1987, he won 122 consecutive 400m hurdle races. The fact that I still remember it was Danny Harris who finally beat him says enough.

Yea I may be slightly ignorant of sporting history but I've just never seen a big event with those odds to win before. I guess betting on most olympic sports didn't exist way back when many dominant athletes had their time though, thus odds never existed for them..

That's exactly what Duplantis is doing though.

Right but that's just a two-way market (three-way including draw). There are THIRTY TWO entrants in the pole vault at the Olympics.

He needs to do it for a lot longer to be comparable. Bubka broke the record 35 times.
Bubka won 6/6 world championships.
Duplantis is 2/3

That's a little disingenuous. Like most Olympic events at least half the field has no shot of winning. The only way this guy probably doesn't win is if he injures himself during the competition. So it doesn't really matter if he is going against the next best pole vaulter or a million other people since basically he is only going to lose if something extraordinary happens.

Of course, but that's sort of the point. They take some small percentage if equity and the fact he is this big a favourite over a massive field rather than just one person means something

He's 24 years old. I mention Mayweather already in the first post because I'm obviously aware of athletes being unbeaten for basically longer than the man has been alive yet. That's why I'm asking about betting odds numbers, not about dominating streaks of wins.

I get that a 24 year old is not the winningest athlete ever.

Also, it's Bubka's record that Duplantis is beating over and over again dude lol

edit: Trying to google some. Looks like Bolt was 1-100 to win the 200m final after winning 100m at 2012 London Olympics. Settled, then, I guess

Seems like a dangerous line to lay for sprinting, must be more mis-steps possible there than in polevaulting since it's just one run...

no

it's needs to be a mainstream sport

pole vaulting is a niche sport beyond niche sports

if the entire world were to take up pole vaulting today and it became a common sport and hobby, every single record would be shattered

Just like if all the best athletes in the US played soccer they'd become dominant over the world in just a few years.

No it absolutely does not when you're at the top of the ladder.

it's not really close at all

average EPL (which is highest paying soccer league) salary is under $5M

average NBA salary is around $12M

also don't need to deal with fans throwing Nazi salutes and bananas onto the pitch
