Here's an interesting way to start your Sunday morning: 49ers free-agent QB Alex Smith is visiting today with the Miami Dolphins.

LOL If 49ers lose him and Manning.

Holy crap that would be terrible for the Niners. Their Super Bowl equity would be in the toilet.

Good for Alex Smith though for taking control of the situation (he was either thinking about firing or fired his agent a day or two ago). Guy has pretty much the worst luck I've ever seen throughout his whole career. Shows tons of character to still be competitive the way he is.

Not likely. Both Smith and Peyton have the same agent. The 9ers are a SB team. No agent in his right mind wouldn't have one of his clients on the SB favorite.

I really liked Kaepernick headed into the draft, and Harbaugh was able to develop Luck... I doubt he'd be ready to make a playoff run in his second year but it's not like the franchise needs to panic if they don't have either Smith or Manning

They are built to win now. They need a competent QB. With Smith they are a legit SB contender. With Peyton they are the clear favorite. With Kapernick they are likely neither of those two.

This should be an easy choice for Peyton. I get that Tennessee if offering him an opportunity to transition into an owner/GM role, but honestly I dont think this guy is going to have any shortage of job opportunities when he is done playing. As long as he is returning to the field, which he has, the overwhelming goal has to be to win at least one more ring. He would have a great chance of doing that on the 9ers. The Titans are nothing compared to this team. His post-playing career plan really should not be that big of an issue for him right now.

With Manningham getting signed Niners now with best weapons for Peyton. If he wants a Super Bowl he goes to the Niners.

The problem with Moss signing with SF is I think they're better off with a smaller receiving corps if Alex Smith stays at QB. Moss is not going to want to bend down and catch all those balls thrown at his feet by Smith. That's why they're going after Peyton imo

Maybe they got Moss and Manningham because they know where they stand with Peyton...

here's a list of current 49ers starters over 28:

justin smith
isaac sopoaga
carlos rogers

they're built to win now but they're still a very young team and all the important players besides justin smith (who is signed through 2013) are locked up long term. with a good qb the team should be built to win for years to come.

anyway it would suck to punt the season because smith got his feelings hurt but it's worth the risk imo.

if for some reason they got moss specifically to be a target for peyton and they don't land him, they can still cut moss before week 1 and not pay him anything.

Bowman, Whitner through 2013 as well... Goldson through just this season. But they will extend Goldson and Bowman almost for sure.

good point about bowman.

i wasn't really considering goldson to be that important. i'm not sure the niners really have any plans to extend him either. there's a reason they keep bringing him back on 1 year deals over and over again while signing every other key guy to an extension.

I hope for his sake he doesn't make the decision based solely on money.

if everything manning's saying about super bowl >>>> money is actually true, then he's taking a backloaded contract in guaranteed money to sign with the niners today or tomorrow

For some reason, I think he is going to the Titans. I just think he doesn't want to play in the NFC and Titans have a sentimental value along with a future FO job. I still am pretty optimistic the Niners land him.

No, because they weren't built to win 2 years ago.
