When they testified before the grand jury, Curley and Schultz denied being told the contact was of sexual nature. Curley said he recalled it was “horsing around” and Schultz said the allegations were “not that serious,” and said it might have been inappropriate touching.

Centre County Children and Youth Services and police were not called. However, Curley said he told Penn State President Graham Spanier.

According to the attorney general, Spanier approved of Curley telling Sandusky not to bring Second Mile children to the locker room anymore.

Second Mile President Jack Raykovitz was also told that Second Mile children couldn’t be brought to campus, although that was never enforced.

The grand jury believed the graduate assistant and that’s what led to the perjury charges against Schultz and Curley. They also believed that incident should have been reported to police and Children and Youth Services in 2002. ..."

I doubt there will be a conviction on these perjury charges, probably a plea to a lesser offense.

This is actually a very good point. JoPa is/was in a unique position to influence things for the greater "good." You really have to have your head in the sand to not be suspicious of ANY grown man that consistently keeps the company of young boys - especially in unsupervised activities.

If I was JoPa, I would have told the university to toss Sandusky out and to assure me that he is being reported to the police for investigation. If I get fired over that, too bad. I would step down if the university did not act. If the issue escalated (as it would if a living legend just up and retired or resigned) I would be very public about it.

The most valuable commodity in the world is allowing a child to have a proper childhood. Once it is taken away, there is no giving it back. People in power have to take the blinders off and make that power useful. In the case of a football coach, looking out for child molesters should be a top priority.

Institutions tend to diminish personal culpability, however some people acquire unique status and should do everything they can to make good of it.

I would do exactly as I said if I was in JoPa's shoes. The fact that people recognize you as a living legend, for better or worse, confers more responsibility on you than just being a football coach.

The fact that JoPa followed the proper protocol should not be good enough for judging one we deem to be a living legend. Perhaps he is a mere "football coach" after all. The fact that the people at the top completely blew it, tarnishes the whole institution, because for better or worse, those people were chosen to lead it.

Believe me, if I see anything that looks like funny business regarding a child, I make sure someone looks into it. Even in my everyday life, I have had a few instances where perhaps it would be easier to let some things go, but I didn't and it turned out my suspicions were correct. Was the wife of the man devestated? Yes. Were his kids? Yes. He went to prison and was deported. However, she told me she understood and respected what I did. Indeed, her first reaction was to be in denial; second to look for a cover up; third - anger; and fourth reconciliation towards the circumstances and outcome. In the end, the right thing was done, but it was not easy on any level.
