I have no opinion on the correctness of the penalties, but the process of "Read Mitchell report hand out punishment without doing our own investigation" looks a bit iffy.

Especially when you consider the context of the blatantly unethical Miami investigation, the NCAA is in a spot where they probably need to make sure they're dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's when it comes to handing out sanctions.

I'm not saying they made a mistake, I'm saying they face a perception issue and that part of the motivation for reducing PSU's penalties may be an attempt at mitigating that issue.

It's not that the quality or accuracy of the Freeh report is in question, just that the choice by the NCAA to not do their own investigation is the sort of thing that raises eyebrows, especially when they've taken less ambiguously inappropriate shortcuts in other investigations.

I know it's hard, since I'm getting a "can't read" vibe from you- but do you think I'm defending PSU here?

I am simply explaining the very real perception that exists in college football media that appropriate due process was not followed before handing out the sanctions and why that, along with the other issues the NCAA faces, might have motivated their decision to reduce the penalties. I've hardly even offered my own damn opinion as to if they should be reduced or if the initial investigation was inappropriate.

? This assumes you think "ability to play football the worst of anyone who gets a scholarship to a d1 school" is something that inherently entitles you to a life changing free education I guess

And taking those scholarships away isn't just putting that money in a pile and burning it. Not that they would actually do this, but psu could theoretically use that money for some swimming scholarship or on some kid who plays piano really well too

I'm curious, how do people think Brown handled this? JoePa was a pretty big-time player and started his coaching there before moving to Penn State. Brown removed pretty much every award associated with him but the athletic board voted to keep him in the athletic hall of fame.

No 1 will ever live up to the standards of Joe Paterno, no1 will be the legacy that he was NFL coaches are unknown unless u follow that team and bill "coulda" stepped in with open welcomed arms and took/started a new legacy no1 knows who the head coach was for any diff nfl team 5 yrs ago but everyone!!!!! Who knew football knew Joe Paterno's name EVERYONE and bill u coulda been That same legacy that same famous face that cared about a city a town and the young athletes u were forming into upstanding performance players and people. u coulda been more than a head coach somewhere no1 will remember u. We all gave u the chance and hopes to fill a big pair of shoes and u can't even roll your pant legs up and be a true legacy that everyone in football will know who u are that's bigger than a measly come and go head coach position fired at any moment nfl job. We all had high hopes and and now your making us feel just like every other college football program not a stand alone with traditions held high school. It was hard to let go of Joe and accept a new coach for Penn State but we all did and were happy and looking towards a great future just wish bill woulda seen us as more than just a stepping stone.
