But those kids made the choice to stay there after the allegations, or commit there knowing the problems that were coming.

And it should be a penalty for the entire program/school/fan base. Sure, these 65 kids or whatever number they're at now didn't do anything wrong but there is an entire athletic department and institution of higher learning who AT BEST knowingly protected a child rapist and at worst enabled him to continue doing what he was doing.

The rest of the kids on the team who have to win 1-2 less games of college football each year? Well, with Penn State having fewer scholarships, that means some players who would have gone to PSU end up at Purdue or wherever, replacing some would-be Purdue player who ends up at Northern Illinois, replacing some would-be NIU player who ends up at Bowling Green, replacing some would-be BG player who ends up at Appalachian State etc.. until you get to the guy who is now no longer being offered a full ride anywhere.

Definitely not a reason to cut Penn State slack, but there are a finite number of scholarships available in college football.

You're giving the NCAA and my former bosses, bosses bosses boss too much credit. If you assume what I suggested was true, I don't think it's that calculated. I think it's more that at the time Emmert was operating unchecked and now that the Miami investigation has blown up in his face the scrutiny he's facing is making them realize that they did skip a lot of what was probably necessary process in the PSU sanctions.

I think this is more an attempt by the NCAA to say "No, look, we're reasonable and competent and can acknowledge our mistakes" than any actual devious plan or absolution of PSU.

It's more than just liking. Penn State football is a religion. Joe Paterno was God to PSU students and alums. Their God was destroyed and the worshipers refuse to accept reality. Instead, they rationalize his behavior to make it seem more acceptable.

The only way they'll truly grasp the severity of what happened would be to defund the football program.
