Thanks, I assumed this would sort of be the case. I was just curious for people saying scholarships could be a recruiting tool for other schools, but pretty much all scholarshipped players at PSU it seems like would sort of get screwed if they want to transfer, unless the "you get to keep your scholarship even if you don't play football" means you can take it with you wherever you go and ones without them wouldn't have real possibility of benefit in this regard until next year.

Or something like the engineering department that I graduated from. Should I stop giving money to engineering scholarship funds because of this? Even though the department is pretty independent.

I won't pretend to speak for SUB but that's not the lens through which I read it.

PSU fans who travel to away games are going to have a stupidly tough time this year. Many people will cross the lines of good taste, some will cross the lines of physical assult. I don't really care about the former, I'll go out on a limb here and say on the record I'm against other schools' fans assaulting PSU fans.

No idea about the lasting image here. My issue has always been with the attitude of the cultish fans (as much as one can care about that stuff which is to say "not a ton"). I feel bad for any fans who immediately said "How could they have done this. **** JoePa". They were lied to and betrayed by the school and programs they supported.

On the other hand I have zero sympathy for the cultists. You aren't the victims and you don't deserve pity. Your school got hit hard, maybe you should try and find out why. They don't deserve to be assaulted but a few reminders of their delusion by drunken opposing fans seems almost fitting.

Basically any scholly PSU kid will be able to get one somewhere else. Might be a MAC or Sun Belt school but they will be able to get one.

You're right, I assume most people would share my desire not to see PSU fans beat up on the road and I read their comments with that as my base assumption. I know my opinion is out there, but what can I say, I'm a risk taker.

Okay, that's good. I thought they were sort of getting trapped.

Not only are they not trapped, but the schools that take them in are given allowances for their scholarships provided they correct the overage in future seasons. The NCAA went pretty far to protect the kids (which they don't really get credit for since it's the same as saying "I feed my dog every day", you don't get credit for **** you're supposed to do).

Yeah, I think you have to be willing to take a bunch of **** verbally, and also certainly be prepared to get out of situations that are going to end up bad physically. I remember on at least one occasion at PSU (and I'm sure it happens somewhat frequently) reading a story in the paper where a group of OSU fans got glass bottles thrown at them for no reason (other than being OSU fans), let alone moral repugnance. I'd be surprised if no PSU fans got hurt this season, and while it's not right, they should certainly be aware this is a strong possibility.

On topic, I see no problem with recruiters offering ways out of a busted football program. Cultist alums are already calling people considering leaving the football program to be traitors. It's pathetic. Penn State betrayed them, not the other way around.
Seems like it just played out like every negotiation in the history of negotiations.

oh yeah, I forgot about this. so any player that's good will be able to transfer immediately to his school of choice.

i doubt PSU fans will hear much of anything let alone have stuff thrown at them in Champaign. It's not because Illinois is exceptionally nice. Schools with bigger rivalries and more passion for football on the other hand...

PSU away games for 2012:

Virginia
Illinois
Iowa
Purdue
Nebraska

Also, I predict they stop scheduling BigT opponents for Homecoming starting next season.

Then again, seems a section of PSU fans have identified Illinois as a big target now due to a 3rd string OT wanting to transfer... haha

Karakul,

Is that just a few more million it will cost PSU if successful?

A third string o-linemen at Penn State contacted Illinois. 3rd string. He's never going to play at Penn State unless injuries put him in the line-up. Illinois was in the final running for this player out of HS. Illinois is extremely light on depth at his position. Initial talks showed mutual interest. Illinois coaches have met with the players' family in Arizona. They are meeting with the player in State College. They showed up in Illinois labelled polos and stuff as coaches do on all recruiting visits. Whether they should've worn something other than a orange polo with a blue I on the pocket is a debatable question. Given the situation at hand, going outside of normal recruiting method is a reasonable point.

But, PSU wins with this "scummy poaching". The player is using up a, now, very valuable scholarship spot at a position of depth and unlikely to play for them. While any loss is regrettable, some have to happen and a player voluntarily giving up one of the precious scholarship spots who PSU isn't going to use anyway is a small win for PSU.

The player wins, which is most important. Illinois gets stronger. The B1G doesn't lose out to another conference.

Facts on everything are still a little sparse, but this seems like a win for everyone involved including PSU.

Haterz blowing up tweetz because they still mad at NCAA. None of those players tweeting said Illinois contacted them or harassed them. They just happen to be the first coaches doing an in-person recruitment trip to a prospective athletes home. Of course, taking the opportunity to flash their school name to other prospective athletes will be taken. I can understand some anger there.

Dont think the loss helps PSU as they can only give 15 schollys a year regardless of there scholly situation.

Not that I give a ****.

Any rapists in this thread want to weigh in?
