The rumors are out that the statue could come down possibly as early as late tonight/very early Saturday motning. I realize the main semester has yet to start at PSU, so a lot of students are not there. But, gee, I can't imagine any negative incidents that possibly happen if the statue is removed late on a Friday night.

Anyone that tries to defend the statue not being removed at this point deserves any negative incident that may happen to them.

That may very well be. But it still seems like the recipe for some kind of Kent St. situation or serious violence now that the news is already starting to spread online.

This seems like a leap. Kent St is notable for cops firing on students, not just student unrest.

You never know, they may call in the national guard...

Wasn't really referring to the National Guard shooting students so much as just violence in general if the school actually tried to do it late on a Friday night.

Well, JoePa's last win was a bunch of BS anyway.
They had a very good chance of not getting it looking at the schedule.
Home game against Illinois that was horrible weather. 3.5 hours of ABC slobbing on Joe's dong.

The big PSU plays of the game are a hit to the QBs head to cause a fumble which was not flagged, getting a 50/50 call on a PI call on 4th and 6 on the last PSU drive that PSU loses without, the officials refusing to review a possible incomplete/receiver down/interception scenario (if I had to guess, I think the call was right but to tell Zook it was unreviewable was hogwash). With 1 more win, Zook likesly keeps his job. Instead, everything was slanted that day so the pederast protector could get the 409 wins (though LOL at all the wins from the booth were he had little to do with anything).

I guess maybe some of the answers will be provided if Spanier, Schultz or Curley testify or turn on the other two to save themselves, but I imagine that some questions will never be answered in public. Some of the questions I wonder about:

1. When did Sandusky actually start abusing kids?
2. Did the Second Mile serve as some kind of underground pedophile network in any way. It just seems like an amazing coincidence that in the early days of the Second Mile, one of Philadelphia's most notorious pedophiles also helped raise money for the charity.
3. What, if anything, did Sandusky have on Paterno or the university or the administrators?
4. What did Paterno have on Spanier?
5. What exactly was the role of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, and did he intentially put the investigation on the backburner to run for Governor? Bringing down Penn St. football and Joe Paterno prior to running for governor of Pennsylvania would have been political suicide.
6. Did Penn St. torpedo Sandusky for the Virginia head coaching job following his PSU retirement?
7. What did Paterno tell Curley and Schultz about the 2001 shower incident?
8. Why was PSU so concerned about whether or not Sandusky was happy with his retirement package?
9. Why was Sandusky given such an unusually large lump sum payment upon retirement ($168,000, IIRC) and why was he granted emeritus status that he did not qualify for?
10. What exactly was Wendell Courtney's (legal counsel for Penn St.) advice in 2001 when the administrators conferred with him about their legal responsibilies to report Sandusky?
11. How involved in the entire scandal was Courtney? In his position as legal counsel for PSU, Courtney failed to notify the Second Mile about the 2001 shower incident, then subsequently began representing the Second Mile legally. WTH?
12. Why did PSU allow Sandusky to bring kids to the football facilities and bowl games after the 1998 incident (Schultz wrote an e-mail expressing the possibility of a "Pandora's Box" of more children than just one).
13. Where is Victim No. 2 -- the one that McQueary walked in on? Dead? Prison? Paid off by Sandusky? Paid off by PSU? Living a normal life?
14. Who on the Board of Trustees was aware of the Sandusky problem over the years?
15. Why didn't the Board of Trustees demand better answers from Spanier in January 2011 about why he and other administrators were subpoenaed?
16. What exactly was the conversation between Curley and Paterno in 2001 when Curley changed his mind on how to proceed?
17. Was McQueary hired as a full-time wide receiver coach to keep him quiet?
a lot of good questions raised here. i'm most interested in the bolded.

Lump sum payment is weird but the emeritus status seemed to be promised by someone higher up in the college than the actual person that grants emeritus status (the provost) so though they disagreed with the decision they basically had to do it because their 'boss' was telling them to.

Confirmed:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/report-...10--ncaaf.html

I figure that this was leaked to notify those opposed to taking it down to go and protect it. Wouldn't be surprised that a BoT member leaked it.

How selfish could you get? If the BoT wants it to stay up so badly, how about they protect it themselves instead of throwing students in the way of bulldozers?

Statue is coming down?

Spoiler:

Doesn't really sound like the statue stuff is "leaked". PSU may not have made an official announcement yet- but for it to be a leak you'd need to know they wanted to keep people unaware.

The PR benefit of announcing you're taking it down likely outweighs the fact that the cops will have to shoo away a few attention seeking kids before somebody removes the thing.

Again, (and I hope every student who ever bitched that we didn't get back to them quickly learns this lesson from this stuff) nothing at a University moves fast. They could have made the decision to take it down in a meeting, and now are spending 2 hours dicking around over how to wordsmith the press release. That's at least more likely than some sinister plan to leverage students into forming a human barricade.

ESPN is reporting that the decision to remove the statue is being made exclusively by Rodney Erickson.

Sounds like a bunch of BS to me. BoT prob made the decision, but are pinning Erickson on it so if things go to ****, he's the one who takes all the heat.

And now they're saying it's not coming down.

Although "they" is probably wrong because you've got a like 20 headed monster that's clearly not on the same page with itself.

I'm actually pretty annoyed at some of my fellow PSU alum for their lukewarm opinions about this whole thing. Some of my distant friends are not responding to this scandal the way a normal person should. They still have their rose-colored glasses on.
Nope. My degrees come from elsewhere.

Over under on the number of idiots arrested trying to protect the statue if/when they decide to remove it? I'm thinking 5.

This is tough.

It could be 0 because when the **** hits the fan, they likely won't have the backbone to stand up to the police.

BUT

People are stupid, and peer pressure is strong, so something like 7 seems to be the number.

I'll go with 7.

So weird. If you had asked me yesterday I would have sworn on a stack of bibles that Ty and Dan's college affiliations were Oregon and Notre Dame (in some order) only to learn today that one was a PSU alum.

Listening to the interview part now. Thanks for bringing this to my attn dids. Already had it on my ipod, but it got moved to the number one slot when I read your post.

edit for odds on cultist being arrested: Even those douches that are camping out said they wouldn't try to stop a Board decision to take it down, just random vigilante vandalism. Still guessing it will be more than zero.

off-topic, but I want an interview so bad with that fat bitch that was on all of the news stations saying, "Leave JoePa alone" or somesuch tripe during the riots.

Depends on when it comes down.

If they do it this weekend, way, way, way over 5.

If they do not announce when it will happen, I think 5 is a good O/U number.

Given the other news of the day (Colorado) I think that this weekend is probably unlikely for the statue to be removed. The Board will do anything they can, I think, to avoid any additional negative imagery, and will be extra sensitive about a riotous reaction that you could get on a weekend in a college town, even in summer session.

But I still think you will get some resisting a police order type of passive behavior arrests when the time comes. Hence why the o/u at 5 seems safe to me.

Ty is a ND fan- but went to PSU. As a WSU fan who went to UW- I totally understand. The sports teams we root for shouldn't have much to do with our education, imo.
