Bigots gonna bigot I guess.
Let's get something straight here. I don't give a damn what gay men do with each other, how they practice their sexuality, or much of anything else - as long as they keep it private and to themselves.
Once it begins spilling over into the workplace, that's taking it too far. Work should be about one thing and one thing only: getting the job done and making sure your company is profitable. The work place
is not (
or should not) be a place where issues of sex or sexual politics are discussed or debated. The workplace is not (or should not) be a place where a "pro gay" or "anti gay" agenda is either promoted or advocated. (
It should also not be a place where strident anti-gay campaigns are conducted or encouraged.) If you feel compelled to discuss or "debate" that kind of highly personal and extremely sensitive behavior, don't do it on the job. Join a political party and crusade for gay rights, animal rights, abortion rights, equal pay for equal work - or whatever turns your motor. Politics is the place to discuss and debate these kind of issues.
On the job, if you are an employee, you are not being paid - at most companies - to promote a gay lifestyle or encourage a "gay friendly" workplace. You're being paid to help the company earn a profit and ensure the security of your (and all your coworker's) jobs. If you're the boss, your job is not to conduct a social engineering campaign - your job is to make sure your customers stay happy and your company stays profitable. That's it. If you fail at that job, nothing else really matters. If you waste a bunch of time and effort getting sidetracked in social and political issues, you will (eventually) go bankrupt - your competition will eat you alive. All of your employees will suddenly be ex-employees joining the ranks of the unemployed. Work (and the wokplace) is about making money - it's not about sex or social issues.
That was my whole point about Graham Spanier. I very much doubt if there was a clause in his contract which stated that one of his duties as PSU's President was to promote a "gay friendly" workplace. He appears to have decided to take on that job on his own volition.
Anybody who thinks I'm a "bigot" for espousing this view is entitled to their opinion - we live in a free country where people can think whatever they wish. One of the nice things about being old is that I no longer have to worry about being politically correct. I'm entitled not to give a damn if somebody thinks I'm a bigot. The workplace is not the place to hash out sexual politics. Those kind of issues belong in the political arena. If my having that attitude makes me a "bigot," then I plead guilty.
