What MT2R said. They wrote that article during a time when they were basically going out of their way not to cover the story in depth. It's obviously a part of the story, if a very small one, but the way ESPN treated it at the get-go is more like "Coach caught raping children. How will that affect your weekend? More after this."

The two go hand in hand. PSU football has yearly revenues of close to 70 million, profits of close to 50 million. Much of that money is put back into other areas of the school: academics, infrastructure, branding, etc. The school employs an enormous # of people in the region from upper class to lower. Do you know how many Penn State branch campuses there are? How many alumni donors?

Football is what brought many people to the school as students. It is what made them proud of their school while they were there, at least partially. And it is what kept them interested in giving back if and when they moved away and began living their lives after graduating with a PSU degree.

Maybe, but a sports outlet instinctively covers the sports angle. It's what they're paid to do and to step outside that mindset means thinking outside the box. Plus it's not like this event is something they've handled before, so they probably didn't consider or understand the scope of it at first.

It's like 1989 San Francisco earthquake. Many people - me included - thought first of its impact on the World Series and game three and then it became apparent not long after that it was a much bigger story.

That is not what that means. You can't take the other side.

I don't know how some of you have followed this so intently from Day 1. I've read most of the Grand Jury report and been in and out of the discussion because it's so relevant and top of mind to sports news, but can't stomach talking about it anymore.
