I mean... at the risk of repeating myself... this is really standard in central PA among PSU fans, students and alumni. It's an indoctrination that starts from Day 1 of your life.
I can understand people who are hardcore fans of teams (I certainly understand that as a huge sports fan myself), especially college teams, getting delusional and overlooking something their favorite coach or player may have done: recruiting scandal, paying off players, taking gifts, cheating on their wives, getting in a fight, robbing a liquor store, loose connection to a murder (some Ray Lewis for you, Baltimore).
But this is just on another level. It's a systematic and continuous crime of the highest depravity targeted at completely defenseless victims committed over more than a decade. How they are overlooking this in their rabid fandom is a bit of a scary reveal into the psyche of the lifelong, hardcore PSU fan. I think there are plenty of other schools too where this culture could exist, but I think PSU is probably one of very few (or perhaps the only) school where they worship a single figure/deity who has been in control and command for their entire lifetimes and, for some people, their parents' entire lifetimes. That just adds the extra layer there and this scandal implicates that universal figure. He dominated PSU, central PA and college athletics as a whole. What other names can stand beside him in terms of legendary status and longevity in the history of American sport? Bear Bryant?
