At the end of the day, the BoT and Paterno handled it poorly. The BoT could have relayed to Joe that he was going to be fired unless he resigned. Then give him the opportunity to come down, hold a press conference, thank everyone, and shape how people would remember him. I think his I'm resigning at the end of the year The BoT doesn't have to worry about me really pissed them off.

Then that debacle on campus never happens. It had to end, but it didn't have to end that badly. Just another failure by Penn St. IMO.

Do you think they asked him to resign and were prepared to take "no" for an answer? They gave him his easy way out- he choose to make it worse.

I really don't know much about college football. Is it not required that Penn St. gets an invite to some Bowl based on their record? I think I remember years ago about a program declining a Bowl but if someone could clarify my first question I would appreciate it.

I don't think they asked him Dids. I think Paterno is scum for not acting but he did a tremendous amount of good for those students and that school. If he rejects a proposal like that then what happened is fine. I'm sure if he said no he was fired. I think if Joe got up, said terrible things happened and for the good of the school I am retiring, it would have changed the way people at least look at him and Penn St.

I wonder if the Big 10 has some outs where they won't let them play for the title.

Regardless, expect them to lose the next 3 anyway and especially so with the turmoil. They just cannot be getting in the preparation necessary for the caliber of opponents they are facing.

Ed Schultz on msnbc has a poll up on whether PSU should cancel their last 3 games and refuse a bowl bid. I actually think this is a good idea. I think it behooves other schools to not play Penn St. at this time for a few reasons: no schools should want to place it's students/ athletes in such an explosive atmosphere at this time. No school should want to provide Penn St. with any extraneous money at this time. No school should want to show support for Penn St. [athletics] at this time. No school should provide any modicum of support for Penn St. in any way AT THIS TIME. Next year, a different story, hopefully.

nope. it's the university as a whole that needs punished. that means the administrators, the faculty, the departments that allowed their salaries to be paid by the athletic department all these years. Sad, but true. My daughter is in research and teaches at a major university, I know how bad this step is.
