Dude humans under pressure/presented with shocking situations do weird stuff. There was a thing recently in China where 15 people walked past a kid who had obviously been run over, before someone finally called for help.

There is no way a normal person would walk in on a kid getting raped and say to themselves 'that kid is being raped, I am going to do everything in my power to stop it'

The reaction would be more like 'UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHWTTTTTTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF FFFF!!!!?!!?!???'

Triumph gonna Triumph. Yeah man you'll never work in this industry again if you are known as the guy who prevented 10 year old kids from being RAPED. I mean who wants to hire a morally decrepit young man like that? I want a company man!

I can't be the only person alive who would risk losing his 28-year-old aged job in order to feel better about stopping this obvious terrible wrongdoing. I mean Jesus money isn't everything man.

And besides if this kid gets fired for calling the cops that is certainly wrongful termination and a suit could be brought against the rich program. Or at least a media circus.

You do what is right and risk suffering the potential consequences. (Which, in this case I doubt even exist).

I've already said that might be true and maybe someone doesn't immediately stop it. But to basically sit on it afterwards and not call the police is just really awful.

If another kid got raped after that event that guy would have a ton of culpability imo.

I agree with this and I somehow think that the "facts" of the case arent necessarily facts just because I dont think everything adds up. It just makes no sense that so many people would know, including apparent eye witnesses, and it would be kept quiet for so long.

I think that kid's 1st instinct was he was misunderstanding the situation, exactly like BA said. I know how disgusting that sounds, but you gotta put yourself in that kid's shoes.... JoePa is God, PSU is infallible, etc.... we've seen this situation before (Catholic Church), same deal; PSU IS a Church to people up in central PA, it's not healthy at all but sadly true.
This is laughable to anyone with a conscience. I mean, really.

I'm trying to put myself in the situation you are describing, and it's just not working. I could maybe see in some sort of family situation? Like, I saw my brother or father raping someone? You could be torn about reporting something like that. Maybe. I mean, I could see protecting a family member from something like a murder charge. Not the best thing to do, but I can see it and maybe understand it.

But some coach or assistant, or any relationship that isn't involving blood relative? Raping a kid of 15? I mean, if the guy was 18 and they were having consensual homosexual sex, not my thing but whatever. A 15 year old? No question.

It might take a day, it might take a week. I might have to ask some friends what they thought, ask my family what they thought, but without a doubt I'm calling the police eventually. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

That's a great point, we're making way too much out of this 28 year old man's eye-witness to 10-year-old's anal rape getting the vapors and chillaxing out of the situation, leaving the pedophile to finish his business undisturbed. I mean, think of all the **** that's happened in human history!

People act way different in groups than they do individually, i forget the exact psychology term for it though. In groups people absolve themselves of personal responsibility to act. ironically in that situation you described the odds that someone would assist the child goes way up as the number of people decreases. The fact that it was one person who walked in and saw this but didnt do anything makes it way worse.

I would hope that I would have the wherewithal to think straight and call the police, but admit that it's something so shocking that it might take some amount of time to register what was really happening and make that call. The immediate reaction of "I need to take this to my superiors" is probably pretty reasonable. So I don't feel too angry at the grad asst for his immediate reaction.
pretty much this

Sitting on it afterword (both for the GA and Paterno) is where the situation becomes deplorable (when it comes to their conduct I mean).

Only if the school is unsuccessful in covering it up. If they manage to sweep it all under the rug (which appears to have happened in 1998 and in this case up until like 6 years later when other complaints were lodged by the parent and wrestling teacher of one of the other victims) after the graduate assistant goes around the chain of command his career is pretty much over. Sure, he could flip burgers and such after that, but I imagine the guy was conflicted because of that knowledge.

I mean, even calling the police isn't that simple. Do you think he should call the University Police? Maybe, but they're basically entirely owned and operated by the University itself. State police, maybe?

I don't know, but IMO the grad assistant was put in an unenviable position.

And that's all before you consider whether or not he's in the "Cult of PSU," that Jimmy was talking about.

Sadly, I don't think it's out of the question that this GA gets blackballed

You have to be pretty sick to have knowledge of something like this and do nothing about it.

BTW, for all the attention ESPN has gotten in this thread, it is worth mentioning that Yahoo! Sports and SB Nation were both on top of this.

I agree. That's why the GA did eventually tell the higher-ups and testified in this. But to call the police, I can totally see why he wouldn't do that. I don't think he made the right decision, but I think making the right decision in this case is a lot harder than people ITT are making it out to be.

Oh man. wtf.

10? I thought I read 15.

This dude deserves all the horrors he gets in prison. I hope he's like Andy Dufraine in Shawshank, without the guards helping him.

He was definitely put in an awkward, terrible situation. Still he has to make the best decision though. Also, definitely call the regular police instead of the university police.

I mean whether he would get a job somewhere else. If he's an assistant coach now then that probably helps his prospects.
