Golf at the Olympics is pretty lol. Especially considering wrestling lost it's core status and was almost gone for the 2020 Olympics. I mean, wrestling is insanely boring to watch, but it's pretty much the most Olympic sport ever.

Golf is a very global sport at the moment with a huge fan base, backed by a chit load of money; not the same as wrestling.

For most of the golfers, while they cite zika as the reason for not going, I think that's just for convenience mainly.

They just don't want to deal with the hellish ****hole that is Rio and are probably more concerned with the crime/safety aspect than zika.

Yeah, I mean I get it. The IOC is corrupt as hell, and only cares about money. Obviously wrestling lacks appeal, but the Olympics to me should be more about traditional sports and sports that generally don't have the limelight. There are other sports like table tennis that should be removed way before wrestling. Pissing on history and tradition is not a good look for the IOC.

I'm heading down - will be sure to document. Rio's been towards the top of the ole bucket list for a long time and I figure with 80-100k security personnel bussed in and transit from the worst areas cut off during the Olympics, it'll be as safe as it'll ever be (..famous last words). We'll see. Anyone else going?

Phelps is a sick champion, but lol at a sport that allow someone to grab 7/8 medals in different specialties that are almost all the same

My gf and I canceled a trip to Costa Rica over Zika. She was more worried about it than me, but I could see her point.

Even though the odds are very low, supposedly Costa Rica is nothing but mosquitos - so you're either going to get bit a lot or not leave your room. It would be annoying to have to freak out trying not to get bit, or get bit and worry just a little.

we cancelled a trip to Mexico bc of Zika. if kids are even a remote possibility for you, that **** is scary. just not worth even a .1% chance your baby ultimately gets infected when there are...non zika places to go

Brazil, I don't get. it seems like a depressing place to visit BUT with cheap and plentiful ice cold beer. I get that you can be safe if you are smart and aware etc, but I just assume go to a place where that's actually nominally safe.

Top golfers aren't going bc they all have millions of dollars already and play in at least 4 other tournaments a year that are more important to them. Zika I would guess is the straw that broke the camel's back

I got bitten in late May eating breakfast in my Copacabana hotel, don't remember if I got any more bites in Rio but I think I got some more in a beach town (Paraty) a few hours southwest.
