they get the next copa america, as well.

Rio still the goat. But yeah, not going to the olympics, and I was planning to a couple years ago (lodging prices aren't helping either). The metro not being done in time is such a major logistical disaster. The drive from copa/ipanema/leblon/etc to where most of the games are going down (a richer suburban-esque neighborhood dead west) is a disaster. Took Clark and I 90mins to cab it out there and it was going to be like 2+hrs on the way back, but we got out of the cab after an hour or so.

Without the metro I just don't know you shuttle that many fans back and forth.

Rio is a city of 6 million, and at the time the Olympics were awarded to them 80% of bathroom waste went untreated and directly into the bay.

The bay where multiple water events are to be held is essentially a gigantic toilet.

Not sure what the fuss is about. I'm pretty sure this is pretty close to what the conditions during the ancient Olympics were like. I see it as a return to the roots, really. In fact, we should fully embrace ancient traditions and have the athletes compete in the nude, introduce chariot racing, and have a huge orgy drenched in olive oil at the end.

It's not really any different than the World Cup conditions except the Zika scare, which is fundamentally irrelevant for virtually all tourists in Rio (no mosquitos anywhere near the ocean plus it is winter). The serious issue for people on-site is the lack of the new train being ready (as KC mentioned above).

And that you will have a much higher concentration of ppl in Rio, the World Cup was at least spread out. Also the aforementioned metro problem, and water sports problem. Rio did a great job during the World Cup dunno about the Olympics...

re: Olympics: RIO Trainwreck Containment

I guess they've officially declared a state of emergency: http://thinkprogress.org/sports/2016...many-problems/

""acting state governor Francisco Dornelles announced a “state of public calamity” in Rio, he said that the crisis might lead to a “total collapse in public security, health, education, mobility, and environmental management.”"

"Perhaps related to the lack of funds available, there have been numerous high-profile crime incidents in Rio in recent weeks.

Among those, an Australian Paralympic athlete was mugged at gun point; a German broadcasting truck filled with equipment was hijacked; mutilated body parts washed up on a beach near the Olympic volleyball venue; and there was a shootout to free a drug kingpin at the hospital that will service many of the tourists during the Games.
"

""The soaring death count ahead of this major sporting event represents an epic failure on the part of the authorities to protect the most fundamental human right — the right to life,” said Atila Roque, Executive Director of Amnesty International's national office in Brazil."

There's a bunch more in there about stuff like stray bullets hitting people all over and police recklessly killing citizens, etc. I'd pass on a free trip to these Olympics.

EDIT:

How bad of a disaster will there have to be for NBC to report on it during coverage?

Probably take an athlete getting murdered or something.

Pretty sure Olympic tourists getting mugged or assaulted or stuff like that will be deemed non-news worthy and probably happens at least some at every Olympics anyway, although it might be higher than normal.

http://arstechnica.com/science/2016/...obial-clothes/

Quote:
Textile engineers at Philadelphia University announced last week that they have developed seamless, light-weight, antimicrobial suits for the US Olympic rowing team. In August, the team will wear the suits as they compete in the summer games in Rio de Janeiro, which is surrounded by water brimming with raw sewage, pollution, drug-resistant bacteria, virus loads up to 1.7 million times the level considered hazardous in the US, and a recent oil slick.

To protect athletes, the new suits contain two layers: one that wicks water away from the skin and another that contains a chemical-based antimicrobial finish. The design is aimed at preventing illnesses, such as the severe drug-resistant, flesh-eating infections German sailor Erik Heil suffered on his legs and hip after racing in a test event in Rio last year.
Quote:
In addition to the bacteria-busting duds, athletes will try to protect themselves by wearing full-body plastic suits, bleach-treating equipment, preemptively taking antibiotics, and rinsing with antimicrobial mouth wash right after being on the water. Some plan to arrive in Rio early to try to acclimate to the pollution levels, while others plan to get there right before competing and leave promptly afterward.
Basically Rio watersport events will be a contest to see which teams have the best antimicrobial gear/strategies and can keep their athletes healthy.

I missed this one: Jaguar shot dead after escape during Olympic torch event

Might as well mix it up with some dangerous wild animal on the loose while you're at it.

Also I guess the drug/doping lab they set up in Rio has been shut down. They're going to have to ship samples out to another country. God knows how many chain of custody disasters are going to result from that.

Some good reads on the subject:

Why Do People Hate America?

True story. I had an ex muslim gf who was travelling back to Pakistan to see her parents. She asked me to pick out a book for her to read on the plane. I gave her the "Why do People Hate America?" book. She looked at me and said, "Are you ****ing crazy, I'm a muslim going on a plane!".
