That was my experience of Rio for the hole 3 days that I was there. Hostel was a dump but that was my fault for not reading the reviews on Trip Advisor first.

Back in my day we didn't catch animals on some newfangled phone computer screen, we used to actually have to go down to the water and piece together our own from what body parts had washed ashore.

All Russian weightlifters banned by their sport's federation. Now it's up to all track and field, all weightlifters, and all athletes with prior positive tests. I'm sure more bans coming in the next few days.

how could it be GOAT when the water is is the same color as water at a waste water treatment plant and not crystal blue?

if you can't walk into the water to your waist and still see your feet, it ain't GOAT folks.

Haven't been to RIO but the GOAT crowd seems like it's probably a series of very similar stories.

Have money and meet or know someone that speaks the language and knows the area. Don't stay long and they can keep you safe enough to enjoy your time without dealing with any of the problems.

If I was mugged in Rio I doubt I would even bother going to the police.

Places like that you keep $10 worth of local currency in your pocket so the muggers get something and go away.

Every large city has its good and bad parts, but when you have police telling citizens and tourists that they can't/won't protect them and daily kidnapping stories, it's going to call into question any city's Yelp rating.

I think puking on command is a pretty impressive skill. Not quite as impressive as jumping over hurdles very very quickly for 110 meters, but that shows real creativity.

I think the "Rio GOAT" thing is based on optimism. It's a stunningly beautiful city with vibrant culture, and one hopes (however likely or unlikely) that the economic failures that have caused all the negative aspects listed here are only temporal in nature.
