Russia lost their final appeal, Russian track and field is now 100% banned from RIO.

Now we see if the IOC/WADA/etc have any balls, and if they dare to ban everyone.

They're leaving it to each sport's governing federation I think?

In cycling you take EPO in a mountain stage so you last longer in the effort, but in sprint it's all about developing the muscles all year to be the most efficient the day of the race no ?
You dope leading up to the competition, cycle off in time to pass the tests. You'll lose some of the muscle mass, but still hit the comp way more jacked than you would otherwise have. The enhanced recovery effects also allow you to train harder in the buildup.

EPO takes time to boost blood count. You don't just take it on the day of a mountain stage - it's a concerted program leading up to the tour. Then again, they cycle you off so you are less likely to pop, but still have some of the positive effects.

Apparently there are discussions going on about banning all Russian athletes. Not just the 'athletics' or track and field athletes... that already happened. All Russian competitors. New accusations from WADA that the Russian government ran doping programs in lots of sports.

MASSIVE lols if the #3 world sporting nation is just completely and utterly banned from competition.
Ruling set for today and early rumour is that all athletes will be banned

Daily Mail reporting that all athletes will be banned. Granted, it's the Daily Mail and nobody else is reporting this yet, so take it with a large pile of salt.

The supposed decision will be 'Everyone is banned, and individual sports federation can apply for exemptions for their athletes, if they think it is warranted'.

No blanket Russian ban (it's up to individual sports federations). Small set of balls that IOC has.

lol daily fail.

Seems like the ban is

* Anyone in Track and Field is banned
* Anyone with a previous failed test is banned

and beyond that there are a couple more rules

Quote:
The IOC said it would only accept entries from the Russian Olympic Committee if athletes could meet the following criteria:

- Athletes must provide evidence to full satisfaction of their federation, which should consider reliable international tests and the specifics of the sport and rules
- IFs seek from WADA the names and national federations implicated in the McLaren report and that nobody implicated in it be accepted to the Games
- Russia may not enter any athletes who have ever been sanctioned for doping

Australian contingent of athletes move into athlete village, along with UK and NZ. They object and refuse to stay because there are strong smells of gasoline, exposed wiring and plumbing that leaks when the toilet is flushed.

Response from Rio's mayor:

has the economy in Brazil tanked that hard the past 2 years (I know it's been bad)?

Had friends in Brazil for a month during WC2014 and they never had any issues anywhere they went

Economy has tanked this year, yes. Nothing tanks like the Brazilian economy. About 8 years ago when my company was getting work in Brazil, we got a class in "what to do when (not if) you are kidnapped". Something about making sure your ATM card can withdraw a decent amount for 4-5 days, no low balance, no automatic shut-offs.

There's no way there's enough hotels for everyone to not stay there. WTF are they gonna do?

There are a ton of hotels. No clue as to what is committed or size of athletic contingents.

My friend (an American) is a professor of Latin American Politics at a Rio university. She is going to enjoy these Olympics (different friends flying in to enjoy it with her) and then is getting out of dodge right afterwards. She's been there for just over 3 years.
