Yeah, that was typical announcer overstatement. It's the semis of an Olympic race, not a sitngo with a disconnected opponent, you're not going to start without them.

they will in fact start the race at times without the swimmer if they are a no show like that. there is no reason to automatically suspect the starting officials actually know what the officials in the ready room know there.
The swimmer is responsible to be ready to race on time- not the other way around.

the sporting part of it is that no swimmer wants to get out of their routine by going and doing what Torres was doing. The officials may at some point say "hey where's lane 2?" - but it's Torres going out of her way to make sure the officials knew and that they couldn't just call the swimmers up on to the blocks (which could very well have happened) that is pretty sporting there. You would hope everyone would do it. Torres was the only one that did. that's one athlete looking out for another- and i don't see much overblown about the way the announcers took notice of it.

Damn, he went sub-10 and looked like he was jogging, wow.

wth. bolt just absolutely blew away the competition. looked like he was just half assing it mid way through it and still won the heat.

having a guy named bolt winning sprints is like having a guy named moneymaker win poker tournaments

Anyone care to make a prediction what the winning time will be in the 100 after watching Bolt jog to a 9.92? He looks like he could run 9.6x.

And then they ask him the stupid question, "So, what did you think about Gay's run?"

so you are saying there will be lots of future donks in the 100 meter dash if Bolt wins this race?

I think Michael Phelps is going to be the surprise 100 meter dash winner. wait- gotta get past week one and into week two of the Olympics now.

I don't see how Bolt can lose. That was pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, I really don't get the fascination with volleyball. Every point looks exactly the same to me, but maybe I'm just missing on some subtle elegance and beauty to the game like I always do with soccer. I just can't figure out a game where every point basically goes down the same way. At least tennis has some volleying and stuff that happens after the serve instead of just hit it up in the air then smash it really hard.

I already saw the shot put results on MSNBC earlier today. I think they're supposed to be on eventually tonight.

This describes 90% of the Olympics though. Swimming, it's just down and back, down and back. Running, they just run in a straight line or in a circle.

I guess Phelps proved it's faster to take a stroke at the end instead of gliding in?

True, but the difference is that swimming and running is a pretty tense race to the finish, and features some truly amazing athletes. I never feel like volleyball players are really unbelievable athletes the way swimmers and runners are, and half the time they're just standing around high-fiving each other. Plus you can get like 10 swimming or track races in the time it takes for them to show one volleyball match.

EDIT: Haha, Spitz basically inflating his ego while simultaneously complementing Phelps.

What logo is on the U.S. jacket that looks similar to Fred Perry (tennis brand). I've seen it on NBA jackets, gymnastics and possibly others.
