That isn't the case for other sports I don't think. So the Olympics soccer is really some weird kind of glorified U23 tourney with 3 veterans allowed. That's just so odd. Not as odd as the new baseball rules for the 11th inning but odd nonetheless. Would be nice to let whoever have however many veterans as they want.
The football world cup is such a huge event in it's own right, that the Olympics just couldn't compete so they settled for some youth thingie instead. As for the veterans, I guess it is just for some star power to increase interest.
But on the whole, football fans don't particularly care about the olympic tournament. It may be fun to watch a game here and there but there is no reason to follow it religiously like the World Cup or European Championships.
