Liukin would have competed in Athens had the age limit not been there. There is an advantage for younger gymnasts. You only become less flexible as you get older and something else I heard mentioned was that the younger ones do not understand the pressure as much. Their whole life hasnt been building up to this one moment etc. The oldest gymnast on both the US and Chinese team folded under the spotlight.

Problem with the rule is the gymnasts that compete in the olympics train seriously from a very young age anyways. And who knows what young Americans would have made the squad because they were not allowed to tryout. There were a few that had a good shot I believe. While Sacramone is one of the best on vault and probably would still done that event a younger gymnast could have very well took her spot on beam or floor.
