No it's not. But describing Richard Thompson's performance in those terms is remarkably ungenerous. He was completely unheralded coming in, he's from a country even smaller than Jamaica, and he ran 2nd in the fastest race ever to get a silver medal. Why shouldn't he celebrate?
As for my analogy, it is persuasive that the athletes assign a fair amount of value to silvers & bronzes, which is the point I was making.
