After the 100m final (was it only 5 days ago?) a poster in one of the Olympic threads made light of silver medalist Richard Thompson of Trinidad & Tobago for the degree of celebration for 'merely' 2nd place.

That poster and anyone else of a Lombardian philosophy should watch the final of the Men's 400m and look at the effort made by the third place runner to ensure that he made the podium. That athlete clearly has a different take on things.

That or he has a healthy bonus from his shoe supplier for getting a medal.

Giving every bit of effort to win a medal and get on the podium != celebrating 2nd place like it's gold when you got blown away in the marquee event in your sport.

USA wimmen by 15, didn't play/shoot well in the first half, but whatever. They have crazy depth, actually deeper than the men's team, since there is no female equivalent of Carlos Boozer. Kara Lawson>>>Sue Bird, IMO. Although Bird is crazy fine.

Oh, man USA softball losing was painful. How bad must it hurt to dominate a tournament like they did and lose the gold medal game, even if the Japanese pitcher was superhuman? lol left-on-baseaments.

Oh, and Rita Dravucz (Hungarian water polo player) might pass all but the Paraguyan javelin thrower for hottest Olympian.

I really thought it was nearly impossible for women's softball to lose. I actually look forward to seeing the game to see what happened there.

The Netherlands, with a population of 16 million has a total of 308 olympics medals - winter and summer games combined. In comparison, Norway, with a population of 4 million has a total of 415 olympic medals.

No it's not. But describing Richard Thompson's performance in those terms is remarkably ungenerous. He was completely unheralded coming in, he's from a country even smaller than Jamaica, and he ran 2nd in the fastest race ever to get a silver medal. Why shouldn't he celebrate?

As for my analogy, it is persuasive that the athletes assign a fair amount of value to silvers & bronzes, which is the point I was making.

Did anyone see the semi-final between South Korea and Norway in women's handball? Sick ending.

SK made a major comeback and tied it 5 seconds before full time was over. While some players were still celebrating, Norway started quickly and won it right on the buzzer. SK refused to leave the stadium afterwards, arguing the buzzer went off before the last goal.

In women's soccer gold medal game, Brazilians are absolutely dominating on the ball, but USA back line are playing out of their minds.

Yeah, Brazil are dominating like crazy. I don't think USA have had offensive posession in the second half, yet. Unless the randomness of women's soccer comes into play, Brazil should win this.
