What a womens 400m final. Great comeback to grab GB's first track gold. Cant believe how much Richards faded in the end.

Wow two consecutive US choke jobs. At least the second race a non choking American took care of business.

Someone was wondering if there was a non invasive way to determine age. Yes there is. You can do a wrist bone density scan and it has been used at youth soccer events in the past.

Nigeria and Argentina both looked awesome.

I once saw a documentary about some east European country trying to kick out child gypsy pickpockets and determining their ages by some wrist bone scan but I never believed it.

This volleyball match is riveting to follow on a refreshing web-page!

Going to a 5th set. (I've never understood why the 5th set in volleyball is to fewer points).

people may jump on me for this but wariner has a better chance of breaking the world record than bolt does. that being said, it's a stretch to think that either of the world records fall, esp the 200. michael johnson's olympic record is a few tenths slower than his world record (or = 43.18 , wr= 43.49) and wariner has run a 43.54 this year so he has a legit shot to take that down

i don't get why wariner is not publicized. he's been the best 400m runner in the world for 4 years now. i would have thought they would jump at the chance to crown him as the next michael johnson

he's white (JKing). but the 400 usually isn't a very publicized event, and I think the only reason it was earlier was Johnson did the 200/400 and was very showy while wariner again is not.

Why is it only the 100m that keeps improving every year. Most of the other T&F events have been around for a while.

The 200 m record was set in 1996.
400 m in 1999.
800m in 1997.
1500m in 1998.
3000m in 1996.

400 m hurdles in 1992.

The shot put in 1990.
The discus in 1986.
The hammer in 1986.
The javelin in 1996.

The high jump in 1993.
Pole vault in 1994.
Long jump in 1991.
Triple jump in 1995.

The only men's records set this millenium are the 100m, 110m hurdles, 5k, and 10k.

I think Mike Powell's jump will probably last the longest as well. Guys seemed to be jumping around 8.3, 8.4 in the long jump when I watched the other day but his record is a whole half a meter more than that. Insane.

Also interesting that the big power events (shot put, hammer etc) havent even been broken by anyone who was subsequently caught cheating. You would think if steroid were ever going to make a big effect and be prevalent it would be in these events but it seems not.

The winning long jump this year was 8.34 m. The record is 8.95.

Meaning that Bob Beamon's Olympic record is now FORTY YEARS OLD. That's so sick.

Quote:
In the qualifying [Ralph] Boston set an Olympic record with 8.27 (27-1¾). The fourth jumper in the final was Beamon, and he had no marks to aim at as the first three jumpers had fouled. Beamon tore down the runway, hit the takeoff board perfectly, and took off, reaching a huge height. He came down hard and bounded out of the pit. Watching, Boston commented to [Lynn] Davies, “That’s over 28 feet,” but Davies felt that was not possible. Boston was actually conservative. The jump was over 29 feet – 29-2½ or 8.90, to be exact. The world record, held by Boston and Ter-O was 8.35, or 27-4¾. Thus Beamon had surpassed it by almost two feet. It was the largest single improvement in a track & field world record ever, and stunning athletic feats since that date are often labeled “Beamonesque.” The mark was so spectacular that a book was written about this single athletic moment, called __The Perfect Jump__, written by Dick Schapp in collaboration with Beamon.

The competition was over. Davies told Boston, “We can’t go on. We’d look silly.” Ter-Ovanesyan commented to Davies, “Compared to this jump, we are children.” After the jump, Beamon was not really sure what he had accomplished, not understanding the metric measurement. But when he was told it was 29-2½, he collapsed to his knees and became dizzy, having to be helped up by Boston and teammates Charlie Mays.

That's what they would have done in the previous Olympics. The rules were changed this year.
