Strange to see so much defensive play in a table tennis match these days. Attack dominates so much because of the power and spin. It is really interesting to watch.

I was just thinking, I know once one person hits the ball it has to alternate from that point, but can you fake them out on that initial serve every once in a while and have one person go after the ball then pull up and have the other hit it, not sure if this would help but I think it would be a cool strategy.

Edit: Also awesome name for that Korean woman "Park M Y" Then has KOR underneath so it looks like, "Park M Y KOR"

It's not a fall. One large wobble is better than 4-5 small wobbles.

Well I guess it's technically whitewater kayaking, but the course is insane. I want one for my backyard.

Do you really fail to see that the female gymnastics much more muscular and beefy than non-gymnastics girls? You may like beefy or not, but they are beefy.

Damn they hand out crazy penalties in the rafting. The leader did the course in a little over 100 seconds and the person that just went had 150 seconds in penalties, finishing +138 seconds after the leader. This is badass.

I went to high school with Scott Shipley - the guy who basically put this sport on the map for the US. By far the best slalom kayaker the country has produced, but he got skunked in three Olympics, even as a big medal favorite in '96 and '00 (but won three World Cups, first American in forever to win one).

I had gym class with him one year. Dude had an incredible upper body: just ripped from the waist up. But man, he had chicken legs. Weird how these athletes sculpt their bodies for such a narrow range of activity particular to their sport.

Edited to add: oh, and I remember watching some program about kayaking, where these Canadian kayakers were training on some river in British Columbia, and mentioning it to Scott. His response - "Yeah, I go there every weekend." After high school, as it turns out, he basically camped on this river for about a year, and trained every day.

Eric the Eel? He won his 100m heat with a time that wouldn't have qualified in the 200m. His opponents both false started.

Yep, this is how Shipley lost his gold in '96. He ran by far the best time in the slalom, but clipped a gate or something, and the penalty dropped him back into like 25th place.

Looks like really hard rain for the US/Canada women's soccer match (US leads 1-0). Does it ever stop raining there?
note - the soccer is in Shanghai.
Baseball (in Beijing I believe) looks bright and sunny for Korea vs. Canada right now (after they had rain problems yesterday).

Not the hugest crowds ever but sure looks way better attended for practically every event compared with Greece 2004. And considering the lousy weather for some of their outdoor events I'd say that's really impressive.

Update - The downpour got so bad that they pulled the teams off the field and are delaying the match. They were already playing through somewhat heavy rain for the first 20 minutes or so but it just got worse and worse and eventually pretty ridiculous. not sure if they saw lightning or not...I'm guessing it's just because it's a really heavy rain.

What random surprising fact about China that you never knew before is your favorite?

Mine: Country is roughly the same size as the U.S. yet they are all on the same time-zone.

2nd: Lebron and Kobe jerseys are more popular over there than Yao jerseys.

Baseball lost in 11 innings to Cuba 5-4 to drop their record to 1-2.
There's definitely a risk they might not advance to the medal round.

Davey Johnson is WAY pissed at the Cubans. If the U.S. can qualify for the semi-finals then a rematch could be awesome.

Quote:
BEIJING (AP) -- United States manager Davey Johnson is disgusted with the Cubans, down a key player and finding his U.S. baseball team in a surprising hole only three games into these Olympics.

Jayson Nix fouled a ball off his left eye Friday to start the bottom of the 11th inning of the Americans' 5-4, 11-inning loss to defending champion Cuba, left the game for the hospital and is likely done for the rest of the Beijing Games.

"He's in bad shape," said Johnson, who accused the Cubans and burly pitcher Pedro Lazo of purposely going at Nix's head.

Nix, who had tied the game with a homer in the eighth, was bleeding badly after the injury and had a lot of swelling, Johnson said.

Lazo hustled to home plate to check on Nix right away and later denied going after the batter on purpose.

"It's one thing if the ball hit him in the face, but it hit the bat first," Lazo said, a huge ice pack on his right shoulder. "This is not right (what the Americans said). This is not correct."

Nix had squared to bunt on the play in question.

Johnson, clearly frustrated by losing in such a fashion on the first day international baseball's new extra-innings rule was enforced, said Cuba likely was trying anything possible to get an out at third base.

"I don't think that's the way to defend the wheel," Johnson said. "Lazo's a great pitcher. I'm sure their game plan was to throw right at the guy's head. It bounced up and hit him in the eye. No game of baseball is worth that. ... I told my guys, 'they're going to do something crazy, and that was their crazy play.' In my wildest imagination I didn't think they'd throw right at my player's coconut."

Also - thoughts with Jayson Nix. That's some really scary stuff.
I know a guy whose minor-league career was finished by a fastball in his eye. He wore a patch for 6 months and surprisingly regained most of his eyesight after that (was told that likely wouldn't happen) but not good enough to play baseball anymore.
