How did the US featuring NHL level players like Bryan Gionta lose to all those KHL scrubs?

I've watched maybe 15 minutes of olympic hockey this year, and are the refs all this horrendous? lol at that last major call.

First Olympic win in 16 years and now against the Swiss for a place in the quarters. Could be worse.

Interesting decision between Finland, Sweden and Canada for a bye into the quarters.

If you're at Harvard and your future options are NHL or Goldman, there's really no incentive to take time off from classes to beat German second division players playing for Slovenia. Even if you're at Cornell or Michigan and your options are NHL or corporate sales it doesn't make much sense.

Admittedly I don't know much about NCAA hockey but there's got to be dozens of drafted players who are dead set on turning pro and go through the motions in classes.

Can't believe the Koreans only lost by 4. What was the spread? 8.5?

Really struggling to care about this hockey tourney

5.5 because I was gonna bet it yesterday on pinnacle - luckily I didn't!

Wow I think I might have shoved all my chips in the middle at 5.5 for sure. Specially after the loss to the Czechs.

I actually noticed something in the women's match between Finland and Sweden a few days back and I don't know if my eyes were playing tricks on me. I think I saw a delay of game penalty and the clock ran for like 3-4 seconds after the penalty was made and the puck was out of play and the ref did not add the time back to the clock. Like wtf? I mean there was a 5 on 3 for like 3-4 seconds, so that additional 3-4 seconds on that 5 on 3 could be something. Nothing great, but still.

But yeah, based on the # of posts here compared to the Curling thread, especially compared to the 2010 and 2014 events, the interest in this hockey tourney has been horrendously bad (and rightfully so).

Awesome win. NHLers or not, our first Olympic quarter finals in 16 years are nothing to sneeze at. It's not like this is the dawn of an golden age for us or anything, the team is pretty old, but we'll take success anywhere we can get it. I probably wouldn't be as excited had it been Slovakia or France we beat: but the rivalry between the German speaking nations is quite strong and after the 2010 WHC quarter final this is the second time we've beaten the Swiss in an important game. Obv they're way ahead of us overall, but feels good man.

We had Sweden on the ropes in our group game. Had more shots and hit iron four times in a 0-1 loss. Obv we'll lose this quarter final >90% of the time but ****, let's give them a game again.
