It's amazing to me every time with these college scandals now so many ppl can be aware of something terrible and not one feel compelled to do something about it. They really are like cults

I think it can be ethical depending on the crime and I'm the biggest "no snitching" guy around. Something like this should be raised because of the likelihood it happens again. Just so different from two guys getting into a scuff or whatever

Point taken and the answers range from "maybe" to "probably" in my estimation. State prosecutors and, to a lesser extent, police departments are (at least in theory) accountable to more people than university brass so it stands to reason that a DA who wants to be re elected would take these charges more seriously than some uni president who serves at the pleasure of a bunch of trustees. Obv it doesn't always work out that way and can even be much much worse a la Mike Nifong but I think it's at least marginally better.

The police and state attorneys do this all the time though. We all at least know of someone who was prosecuted by the state after the victim dropped the charges or changed their stories etc. It happens all the time in domestic violence cases. Also if a cop sees Person A assaulting Person B the cop is going to arrest Person A regardless of whether or not Person B wants to press charges.

DA wanting to be re elected seems to go counter to bringing charges against NCAA sports cults.

Making it a crime not to report doesn't do anything when the asshats in charge of law and order are all aboard the cover up train.

We're talking about the south. There is a reason federal troops had to be sent in to let black kids go to school with white kids.

this doesn't happen because victims (or anyone other than the DA) have no authority to drop criminal charges. The most they can do is lie/change their story about what happened. What the victim wants is completely irrelevant in criminal charges

Universities are like smaller versions of the Catholic church. They try to handle everything in house to avoid bad press and because they think they know better about most everything than the unwashed masses do.

The US has a stupid problem with alcohol. It's just ****ing absurd that 18 year olds can't drink, and the prohibition just contributes to bad behavior.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand here's your first problem.

It's crazy that the Baylor thing isn't getting much attention. I live in Dallas, and it's not even being talked about that much here. Local radio has done a few segments on it, but not near as much as I would have thought.

Since I grew up down there I have to admit you're right. The only hope is to move somewhere else, but then it turns out there are asshats everywhere.

Dunno why baylor's getting all the hate for what I thought every university/college does. It's not because they think they know better (though they probably think that), but they don't want the press and if reported it counts on all those #stats. Everybody wants to say "see no rapes happen here!"

The biggest problem is simply what to do about it, they have all the power and all the money. It's tough to fight that especially when if it's not you or someone you know who you heavily care about, you don't give a damn whatsoever so 99%+ don't give a damn.

That everybody else ****s goats is the goat-****ing apologist's usual argument. Besides the fact that the premise is false, it's a misdirection.

No. Just no, man. This is a legit ****ing outrage. Silencing rape victims is not standard.

A Baylor player was charged for "felony stalking" today. Can we call this progress? He didn't get a chance to rape her and the police were called!

Looks like the fine gentleman who just got arrested - BY THE SAME PEOPLE WHO SLUT SHAMED RAPE VICTIMS INTO HUSHING UP - for stalking this time, previously sexually assaulted a woman then violated a court order not to contact her. Swell organization.

Because of course.

Quote:
Former Baylor chancellor Ken Starr (yes, that Ken Starr) praised the character of ousted head football coach Art Briles, saying he felt Briles had been the object of a “grave injustice,” in a Saturday interview with the Texas Tribune.

Starr was forced to resign and Briles was fired earlier this year after an investigation of the university’s repeated flaws in responding to sexual assault accusations against its football players. The independent investigation found “a fundamental failure by Baylor to implement Title IX,” including a “lack of strong institutional management” and “specific failings within both the football program and Athletics Department leadership, including a failure to identify and respond to a pattern of sexual violence by a football player, to take action in response to reports of a sexual assault by multiple football players, and to take action in response to a report of dating violence.”
Quote:
“A grave injustice was done to Art Briles,” Starr said of the coach’s firing, going on to say that he takes issue with media descriptions of Briles’ behavior. “Coach Briles has been calumnied ... it’s completely unfair.”

Of Briles’s character, Starr had nothing but high praise, requesting “fairness to Coach Briles” in discussion of the administration’s failings and describing him as “an honorable, decent man who committed his life to molding the lives of young men.”

In an hour-long interview that involved much in the way of circumlocution and meandering non-answers from Starr, there was but one question that received an immediately clear reply:

“Was Art Briles given a raw deal?”

“Yes.”

I agree in part. Title IX is designed to force Universities to investigate and properly address issues of sexual and domestic assault. If they do not investigate they can, and should, lose the funding. It DOES NOT preclude the schools from involving the police when and if the complaints are logged. In fact when schools do not engage outside police departments (even if they have campus police) they tend to get themselves in these type of situations. This part of Title IX was put in place because schools often did exactly what Baylor did.

This ****storm is just beginning. The NCAA will be forced to address it once the courts are through with it. You should notice that the NCAA and the Big12 is strangely quiet so far. This won't follow the PSU/Pedophile path. PSU got off because the NCAA is so poorly run and handled it like the Key Stone cops. Unfortunately there is no Title IX for little boys knowingly getting raped in college football showers. Baylor knowingly and systematically allowed this all to happen. What ever they get should be tripled.

If Art Briles ever coaches another football game the team that hires him should be boycotted. And BTW - what does it say about the other Baylor coaches, players and fans who two weeks ago clambered in his defense and rallied for him to come back? Sound familiar PSUers?
