They're ridiculously easy to get into. That's a Nintendo high mark of achievement, being able to pick up and play almost any of their games.

Round 1, Pick 3

Spoiler:

Starcraft, Blizzard Entertainment (1998)

Spoiler:
This one needs little introduction. Adored by millions worldwide, Starcraft/Brood War is the GOAT RTS and national pastime of Korea. The game's popularity (over 11 million copies sold to date) effected the strongest, most competitive progaming scene the world has known and inspired a generation of gamers to take their talents to South Korea. Ok srsly though most nubs on bnet ended up crying for a no-rush 15 on $$$$$BGH$$$$$, but, point is, this is an historic game that has stood up--some might say even improved--for well over a decade.

Check out some of these luminaries; they all gosu as ****:

y u have black eye, boxer?

SC would have been my #1, but first two picks were a bit ahead of my time.

playing the custom rules maps on battlenet was how I spent ~20 hours a week when I was 10-13.

I think we were ghana take SMB3 if it were available and we considered some SNES titles for this spot, but ultimately BW had too much value

And so it begins.

Starcraft is not accessible enough to be considered for this high.

You could put a SC gamer in front of Mario 3 or Ocarina and they would enjoy themselves. The reverse would not be true.

It's like a top 10 pick but I'm not sure about 3.

I think the only game ever to spawn a viable, long-running professional gaming scene that has viewership in the millions probably qualifies as accessible.

I am just gonna say no. Typical casual gamer comment.

Your goal to "win" this draft is to have a diverse selection of high quality games
SCBW is arguably the highest quality game of all time. Its longevity and broad spectator appeal kinda prove that beyond a doubt.

Starcraft is AIDS, never got the appeal.

Was either of the first two picks able to bring >12 hours per week of gaming fun to kids for a period of multiple years?

SC pretty much crushes every other game for its durability, due in large part to the map editor which allowed the creation of some very fun custom maps (for play on Bnet) that were completely dissimilar from the original game. Original game was obv great, but the custom maps were a very nice break from it.

Yeah but I like girls and doing things so Starcraft doesn't really appeal to me in that sense.

It's uber nerd sub-community is very impressive though.

BroodWar is historically megaelite valuetown at #3. It's the chess of video games (the ChessMaster x000 series being the Hungry, Hungry Hippos of video games)

Posting from phone will edit with writeup when I get home

Round 1 pick 4
Spoiler:
Street Fighter 2: Turbo

The first video game I ever got just happened to be an instant classic that revolutionized the fighting game genre. It is widely regarded as the most balanced fighting game of all time and is still played in tournaments around the world.
