Loling at people for being excited going into a tournament is stupid (fun, but stupid). A boom-just cycle is still much better is still better than a bust-just cycle, at least providing you're not gambling too much in the boom phase. Also, this plan of tempering expectations in order to not be as disappointed in the end never works anyway. I weep for all England fans who were too grounded in reality to join the it's coming home party three years ago, only to be just as crushed after the semi as everyone else.

A ton of the media hype for England 4 years ago was "wow, basically every good team is on the other side of the draw, we could really make it." Then they almost did! This team is so, so much better than that one.

I'm not betting on them to win, nor do I think they will, but it's their best team since I've been following football. The early 2000 teams just had injuries before every tournament, everyone bar Henderson is healthy.

Maybe its because I am an old, but the alleged hype England receives now is nothing, literally a vacuum relative to the hype it used to get in the 80s and 90s and slightly diminished but still very high early part of the millennium.

When English league teams were mostly English players, their was much more ignorance about the abilities of foreign players and hence a massive over estimation of the abilities of English players.

Years of having the best players be foreign + perpetual disappointment has smashed the previous medja created false consciousness of the Ingerlund fan base who genuinely believed that Ingerlund were locks to win every tournament and were absolutely baffled when they didnt.

What's the EURO hype like in general elsewhere, as in being excited in the tournament itself? In Germany it's really dropped off a cliff compared to at least since 2006 I feel. I'm guessing the vast majority of it is due to covid, but I wonder how big a part low expectations and the pan-european format play. Tbh I don't even think the low expectations are that important, those have existed before and it lead more to rage/bitterness/pining for the good old days than indifference.

denmark is the most hyped i can remember before a tournament. games at home and the best team in a long time

all the others are lucky there's a bit of a crisis with the forwards because the rest of the team is the best in europe
