Anyone playing this season? Kicked off spring workouts with another game at our local single-A stadium, home of The Hillsboro Hops. 45ish and rainy at the start but dry by the 2nd inning.
I am in the Coachella Valley for a few months and went and watch two California Winter League games the other day in Palm Springs.
Players pay 3 or 4K to play I think.
So, where do the top players hope to go from here? The Frontier League?
Maybe even an invite with a MLB team for assignment to A ball or a developmental league below A?? I didn't really see anyone that jumped out as A ball ready.. (but only saw two games)
What surprised me was three of the best/most athletic players I saw were catchers.. Big, strong guys with strong, accurate arms..
Any of you ever play in this league or know anyone who has??
Fun moment from a game last week. In the words of our third baseman. I was pitching:
Bases loaded and a fly ball to left and our LF made a great sliding catch. Their runner on third base was almost home and their third base coach was like get back and tag up but he wasn’t paying attention. He was dead to rights but LF's throw to third was off line so he got back. I got the ball and pretended to throw to KJS.
I thought everyone and their mother knew I had the ball. KJS pretended to tie his shoe on the grass just off the mound like a gritty veteran. He knew what he was doing. After what seemed like forever dude finally starts taking his lead off third and I pounced. I figured if this guy was so clueless on the fly ball tag up play then he was a prime hidden ball trick candidate. Ump wasn’t even paying attention but they convened and got the call right.
I can’t believe it actually worked. No words were spoken between KJS and I, no pre-planning, just a silent understanding and chemistry that comes from playing together for so long. They got duped and we got out of the inning without giving up any runs.

Thumbup.
Not being ironic, I love when the hidden ball trick works at all levels.
Bump for 2021 amateur baseball. After no seasons in 2021 Portland leagues are a go, playing in one 30+ weeknight under the lights and one 45+ on Sundays afternoons. I am 51 now and missed my chance to play national 50+ tourneys last year, hoping to rectify that this year too.
