One thing that sticks out to me is Miami getting a 1 seed...and getting stuck playing a tough New Hampshire team in New Hampshire. It's not their home arena but they will obviously have the advantage of fan support and easier travel.

Don't know why I never found this thread earlier. Had no idea about your Miami past MB. I'm graduating from Miami this May. Hope you enjoyed the Mason Cup victory as much as we did on Saturday night.

Going with a UMD, BC, UND, and Miami FF.

I was really hoping Miami would have been placed in the St. Louis region. Decent presence there and not too far from Oxford iirc. But yeah...like you said Bob, drawing NH in NH round 1 is pretty terrible.

UNH dropping to a 4 seed screwed everything up. BC was set to take the Manchester region, but then had to go to St. Louis to avoid the intraconference matchup. UNH was in Oxford to start the season this past October. Resulted in a split, both winning 6-3. It will be a good, up tempo game on Saturday.

BigTen hockey a reality:

Quote:
The Big Ten will announce today its decision to form a Division I hockey conference, to begin play in 2013-14.

The league will include the six Big Ten that will be playing D-I hockey by then — current WCHA schools Minnesota and Wisconsin; current CCHA schools Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State; and newcomer Penn State, which will begin play as an independent in 2012-13.
Mass realignment go-time.

As a Michigan hockey fan, I'm very torn. I liked the CCHA, but being able to guarantee kids that ~all of their conference games will now be on national TV should do a lot for recruiting. And of course a fan, getting these games on TV will be sweet.

Just got back from the Joe and watching the hawks take down the mason cup!

Question: What is the leftovers from the CCHA going to do?

I don't know, but you bring up a good point, which is the new Big Ten postseason tournament (if they even bother having one with only 6 teams) better not have the trophy named after Ron Mason.

Serious answer is that I'm guessing the leftovers from the CCHA will try to stick around somehow as the CCHA. I think it's do-able. Miami + ND is a decent top of the conference. They could try to pick off some ECAC or Atlantic Hockey teams. The WHCA+CCHA could try some artful mega merger. I'm just throwing **** out there.

Mega-merger is not going to happen. Travel too awkward and too many teams. But it will definitely be tougher for the CCHA and WCHA. Those leagues just won't have the same kind of prestige. Not even close.

I do think Robert Morris possibly for the CCHA at some point is a possibility. But that hardly makes up for losing a Michigan.

Miami and ND at top of CCHA (if they are still the premier teams) is not at all the same without Michigan and Michigan State in there. Smaller schools and programs like Ferris State or Lake Superior State really benefit from the excitement of their matchups with Michigan and Michigan State. It's their biggest crowds of the year almost every single year.

No matter where Minnesota or Wisconsin are in the WCHA standings you better believe Minn-Duluth and St. Cloud are more excited for those games than any others.

Maybe it won't be quite as bad as I'm envisioning because there are still a ton of non-conference games in there for everyone. But Ferris State no longer gets Michigan and Michigan State guaranteed in their building every year and that's going to hurt.

Back when this whole D1 college hockey thing was really growing and being put together more in the 70s and 80s it was completely understood that the big schools HAD to be in the same conferences as the little schools for the good of the whole sport. Michigan had to help along Ferris State be at the same level.

The Big Ten will be a monster conference and I think will get more of the top recruits than they do currently. national TV and more "big" games...no-brainer decisions...Miami's recruiting efforts just got a bit tougher I think. Great for them and I think that conference will win their share of national championships. I don't think it's too crazy for them to get 4 out of 6 teams in the national tournament sometimes.

Hockey East will likely vault into a clear 2nd best league in the US. WCHA will be 3rd. The Miami-Notre Dame league (otherwise known as CCHA) might fall to 4th.

My initial instinct is that this could be bad for the totality of college hockey though. I hope I'm wrong. But I'm positive there are others who are involved in college hockey who are somewhat concerned and kind of holding their breath over this whole thing.

I was happy when I found out about it but was driving home from Toronto after broadcasting a minor league hockey game there. So I wasn't watching on TV or anything.

Kind of too busy sometimes to keep up with any other games or leagues other than the ones you're currently working. For example, coming up I have 6 games in 5 different cities in just 8 days. I will have pretty much no idea wtf is going on wrt to the NCAA hoops tourney (and probably the NCAA hockey tourney too).

Not sure why you would. I suspect the remaining 8 teams of the CCHA will continue to hold their tournament at the Joe. I'm guessing the CCHA/Joe contract is a multi-year thing. Only way they don't keep holding it there is if the Big10 wants to hold their tourney there instead and can cut their way in somehow.

FWIW, none of this Big10 stuff is a surprise to anyone. This has been known for several months. It's more "official" now. But it's been publicly discussed and everyone was aware of it for almost a year I think. The CCHA and WCHA people have almost certainly been discussing various plans and ideas in regards to this for quite awhile now.

And I promise that guys like Ron Mason and Red Berenson, etc don't want to see the CCHA go down in flames or anything like that. What that means for the future I'm still not exactly sure.

I think there is potential for long term value if hockey conferences start to align with the conferences from football and basketball. However short term this is going to be bad for the smaller schools. So many of the top hockey schools aren't known for any of the other big NCAA sports.

I know Atlantic Hockey schools get a boost from playing UConn because it's the only school the average college fan has heard of in the league. A six team league is obviously going to have a lot on non conference games to play; hopefully they will keep playing some of their traditional opponents.

Went to a Saginaw Spirit game last friday. Sat behind this kids parents

Really nice people, I wish the best of luck to them. They also have a 9 year old boy that I was able to swap some peanuts for 1% of his first NHL contract. Risky trade I know, but I think it was well worth it.

Other than that, we did what everyone should do at any minor league hockey game. We got really drunk, was totally loud, and had a great time. Oh, and my cousin planted one on Sammy Spirit. Section U6 had a riot.

OHL/QMJHL/WHL playoffs start this weekend.

Since everyone in the league basically makes the playoffs, lots of losing teams are in. In the OHL Eastern Conference, half the teams in the East had sub-.500 records. Belleville makes the playoffs with a 21-43 record, they finished 62 points behind the team they'll play in the first round, Mississauga.

In the QMJHL, 5 teams have losing records that are in. Cape Breton, with 18 wins on the season, take on Saint John in round one. Saint John only lost 7 games all year. 78 point spread...

The WHL has 4 teams total with sub-.500 records, but nothing really as drastic as the O or Q.

CHL Top 10 going into the playoffs...

1. Saint John Sea Dogs
2. Saskatoon Blades
3. Mississauga St. Michaels Majors
4. Montreal Juniors
5. Red Deer Rebels
6. Quebec Remparts
7. Portland Winterhawks
8. Owen Sound Attack
9. Niagara IceDogs
10. Drummondville Voltigeurs
