Grass is posh. It’s like bathing in milk. Kind of stupid but would you pass up an opportunity?

Leave it to you degenerate Americans to rate an artificial non-traditional surface above the two natural and traditional surfaces smh

Didn't know this thread existed but the last 2 pages I read have some really bad takes. Wooderson being spot on definitely one of the highlights

Hail to federer the goat because he almost won vs novak and rafa's success on clay should be discounted

All 3 are great, I'm a pro-nadal guy but Novak is indeed the goat, thread can be closed as far as i'm concerned

Bolded is basically where I'm at. I really want it to be Nadal and think a lot of the arguments against him are dumb and irrational, but I'm becoming consigned to the fact that none of that matters and there's only one argument that you need, "Novak is better."

Even if he's not quite there yet, Novak's trajectory relative to Fedal is unreal. Current US Open betting odds have Novak +125 to +140, Nadal +400 to +500, and Fed +500 to +600. A healthy Novak is a prohibitive favorite at HC slams, with just slightly longer betting odds as Nadal had to win this year's FO (EVEN). He would be the favorite @ Wimbledon again, and probably 2nd favorite or tied for 2nd favorite at the FO.

If healthy, I would be quite surprised for him to end the 2020 season with fewer than 18 GS titles to his name.

Hugely disingenuous to just quote Rafa's FO price with no context. He was evens because of huge health and form clouds. Djok and Thiem's prices had almost doubled by the end of the third week despite both playing well, once it was clear Raf was 100%

Agreed on the rest of the post that Djok's trajectory is insane, why I think he's probs the GOAT, but be careful of projecting too far into future. Things can change fast.

Prior to the French open, Rafa was hanging a pretty lackluster clay season this year. Fognini won the first clay M1000, Novak won the 2nd, and Rafa won the 3rd.

Fognini beat Rafa in straight sets at the Monte Carlo M1000 final.

At the Barcelona 500 event, Thiem beat Rafa in straight sets.

At the Madrid M1000, Tsitsipas beat him in three sets in the semifinals (Novak won the title).

At the Rome M1000, Rafa beat Novak in three sets.

I post this just to show that it's not like Rafa is still unstoppable at all times on clay. This year going into Roland Garros there were big worries about his ability. Obviously he performed exceptionally well in Paris, but the point is still valid.

If I'm correct, the last active non big 3 player to have more than 3 slams was Agassi.

I could be swayed for GOAT either way, but after the US Open one thing is clear now: Fed is third place.

This stat is amazing: Federer has lost 6 grand slam matches where he had a match point, including 3 SF and 1 Final.

Rafa and Novak combined have lost 0.

Yea because arbitrarily cutting one of the four slams gives a far more accurate representation... :/

But you're right it is worth noting that they've played an inflated number of matches at RG. Normalising by matches played per slam (expressed in Nadal win percentages):

AO: 0%
RG: 86%
WI: 33%
US: 66%

Overall: 46%, so a very slight edge to Djok. Sounds about right to me, think most people would agree Djok has a narrow edge head to head overall, although some of that def comes from there being an extra hard court Grand Slam (if we normalised by matches per surface it would be Nadal 53% overall).

Kinda funny that the edge comes from Djok dominating Nadal harder at AO than Nadal dominates him at RG haha

4-4 (16-16 in sets) in Grand Slam Finals too (with a pretty even distribution: 3 US, 2 RG, 2 AO, 1 WI). Just such a close, sick rivalry

Yeah I don't think we should punish a guy for being the indisputable GOAT on a surface when talking about who the GOAT is. Feels like that should be a point in his favor.

Putting Novak first seems absurd. His career overlaps perfectly with Rafa and he's behind by 3 slams, nevermind that another contemporary has them both beat.

Fed has 7 GS titles before Djokovic was ranked in the top 50, and 12 GS titles before Novak had his first. They aren't contemporaries. And if you compare the parts of their careers they were contemporaries, well, it isn't much of a comparison.
