So, I hear "high floor"...so, 2nd pair D-man at worst. Obviously, you hear better too. And RH Defense is need. Just the Capitals didn't want to trade up #5 to add Mitchov? This D seems like a 10-12 pick in this draft. Michcov, R. Leonard, Dvorski, Bensen...all considered better prospects by "experts" and youtubers. It's possible Habs tried and weren't finding good enough offers. AZ passing on Mitchov for a different Russian?

5. David Reinbacher, RHD, KLOTEN (SWISS)

October 25, 2004 | 6′ 2″ | 194 pounds

Tier: Top of the lineup player

Skating: NHL average
Puck skills: NHL average
Hockey sense: Above NHL average
Compete: Above NHL average

Player comparable: Brett Pesce

Background: Reinbacher was a top-four defenseman for his NLA team this season. He had the second most productive draft season by a player in NLA history, behind Auston Matthews, and the best by a defenseman. He was a top player for Austria at the 2023 world juniors. He played regular minutes for Austria’s senior team at the Deutschland Cup. He played for Austria’s U20 team at the 2022 world juniors as well.

Analysis: Reinbacher is an excellent all-around defenseman. His mobility stands out immediately, especially as a 6-foot-2 right-shot defender. Reinbacher’s gap control is quite strong; he kills a lot of plays due to his feet. He can close on guys with his body too, and shows a high compete level to win back pucks. He’s very polished defensively for such a young player, and projects to shut down good NHL forwards. He’s able to both skate and pass pucks up ice. He’s got good offensive touch, showing solid hands and better vision. He’s not dynamic with the puck but showed this season at a young age he could make plays and move the puck like a pro. His sense is very good and he projects to be a power-play guy in the NHL. Reinbacher is a potential top-pair, all-situations NHL defenseman.

Thoughts on the pick: In Reinbacher the Canadiens get a true premium defense prospect, a player with top pair potential and a chance to become a star if he really hits. Reinbacher immediately becomes the best defense talent in the Habs organization, and a future blue line with him, Kaiden Guhle, Logan Mailloux, Lane Hutson and Justin Barron looks like potentially a very good group. Reinbacher is a mobile, competitive defenseman with size and offensive upside.

If the Habs weren't going to take Michkov, I'm ok with the Reinbacher pick. We should have a rock solid D lineup. I'm optimistic for us in 2025.

Hutson is sick.
My London friends say Mailloux looked awesome for the Knights.
Guhle delivered in the show.
Barron is definitely serviceable.

Seems optimistic to say Reinbacher is the best of that core. If he is, the only debate is cup in 25 or 26?

O'reilly and Schenn going to free agency market to test their worth, Sounding like at any moment the Maple Leafs have signed Ryan Reaves.

Leafs are doing what I suggested. Old cheap enforcers. Idk the terms. I know "multiyear" freaked out Leafs nation. But it could be 2 years 1.8 and they can move off of it...who knows?..maybe terms of deal are out now again idk.

Joel Edmundson to caps for 3rd and 7th. He's good at what he does if healthy...being big and shutting things down.

Oreilly wasn't to test worth, he just wanted out of Toronto. Was happy with term and amount Toronto offered.

I could use some crop hail insurance. Thanks for the lead!

Meanwhile, the Stars have very little cap room, but really no need to change much from last years team. So all is good.

Yeah that's what Dangle said.. 11 goals worse.
Seems like Leafs trying to change the culture, doing the obvious level 1 fan analysis moves...getting tougher! Could work though.

Just seems the Leafs on paper got enough goals at the top of their lineup. Either they get it done or not. None of these piddly moves is going to keep them from a decent playoff position. So they figure add character guys, tough guys, and hope it rubs off on...really it's Marner in my mind. He's the nervous one. Mathews gets his shots and there is variance. They all could use...they always use that phrase "come out with your hair on fire"...they don't.
