Only about 12 goals, and like I said, I've only watched a few games.
Tonight I missed the first couple of periods, now I'm watching and once again we have Panarin coming out of the penalty box. The Jets shot the puck with 1 second left in the penalty. It couldn't have been a worse time to lose possession.
In this case, Pionk, a defenceman, is half-way up the wall and in a good position to get a rebound. The shot comes from the other defenceman, Schmidt. Schmidt gets to walk it in and there are a lot Ranger bodies, it's a good shot to take, there's a Jet forward at the side for a rebound. The puck doesn't get through and Zibinejad corrals the puck, seems to be very aware of the penalty ending and sends it up to Panarin. Hurray for Hellebyuck, he's looked awfully good in the preseason.
If Pionk knew the clock was ticking, would he have been back on the blueline? Would that have helped? I think maybe Schmidt shouldn't have shot that puck. I don't think you are more likely to score there than to have that breakaway come back on you.
I think if you are going to shoot, you need to shoot from the sides, where the puck ends up in the corner or coming around the boards if it isn't on net.
How likely are you to keep possession there if you don't shoot? Probably pretty good if Pionk was on the blueline.
How long is that danger period? 5 seconds before the PP ends until about 10 seconds after the PP ends? That's an eternity.
If you are the PK team, can you force this to happen?
It's 20 seconds into this recap video:
