It seems the refs are too scared to give a team a powerplay. The NHL should find some new refs who will do their job.

You must have missed the power play literally a minute before that based on nothing.

i really hate that dump-in by Pietrangelo with 60-90 seconds left

puck cleared the zone, and instead of passing it across, buying a little more time, or flipping it in soft, he just pounded it back in while his teammates were still trying to clear the zone = zero forecheck = ez exit for the defending team

guys do that all the time and i don't know why, kind of blows my mind really

don't get the angled flip to the corner doesn't get more play
basically like a punt, give the return team some time to get in there

If you look closely, you can actually see Ovechkin use his mind control to force Niskanen into hitting Crosby. You have to kinda squint your eyes and look at it from an angle, but you have to believe it's there.
Ovechkins stick bounces off of Crosby pretty damn quick. There's like zero chance he's actually trying to slash him. He was trying to catch up to guentzl, who passed it to Crosby, and from that point they were both already on a collision course.

Part of the problem is that any time they try to enforce discipline, the NHLPA appeals/fights everything to the moon. The league said as much in their most recent response to the concussion lawsuit:

http://www.tsn.ca/league-points-fing...-case-1.739833

Daly testified that after NHL general managers approved a rule “conceptually” to ban head-only contact with a vulnerable player in June, 2007, “…it was the NHLPA who resisted and objected to a rule change…”
...
On March 9, 2009, then-NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly told a NHL general managers’ meeting that players did not support the elimination or reduction of fighting from the game, according to Daly’s affidavit.
...
In March, 2013, the NHL tried to improve safety regulations for players by introducing a mandatory visor rule, Daly testified. He said that during one competition committee meeting that June, the NHLPA indicated it would only support such a regulation if it exempted current NHL players

Players want to keep fighting so they can police themselves+ fighting puts more fans in the seats.

Concussions through fighting only affects a small population of the players so I can see why there is inertia to remove it

Players keep fighting against it because they grow up learning to play one way, and that's also the way their coaches and gms expect them to play, but should accidental injuries occur, they are the only ones being punished.

Funny nobody is talking about the Ovechkin slew-foot on Schultz at the end of the game. It was one of the dirtiest slew foots I've ever seen. No penalty on the play

Right. It's the same pushback the NFL gets. "But we've always done it this way! Why are you trying to ruin the sanctity of the game!"

It's not about sanctity. That's a tv narrative. The issue is shared accountability. The culture of coaching needs to change faster, although it's already too late for anyone who is not on their ELC in the league.

Goddamn it really ****ing sucks being a fan of Pittsburgh sports that's rational. It's like being a Red Sox/Pats/Celtics fan that isn't a racist. Everyone forms an opinion based on how they see a team's fans act, and the fans that are always heard and clog up all the talk are the mouthbreathers that wear black and gold glasses and only see things in favor of their beloved Stillers and Pens.

It just makes me ****ing sick. I'd like to rant more but I have to leave. Very therapeutic.

ya that's part of the problem, but gl with the whole "we've been trying to do something about it for a whole 10 years" argument when the situation goes back way longer than that, and includes withholding information about the dangers of head injuries.

fact is coaches/GMs/owners/league haven't really wanted to do anything either. somewhere in the post-Savard world i remember Big Bob saying that coaches/GMs/owners were much more concerned with losing players to suspension than to injury, so they didn't want to take a harder line on this issue. and obv the loleague showed no intelligence or leadership their either, as usual.
(like it might have been smart for a lawyer like Gary to step in and explain to this donk owners who liable they are here, but herp see u in court derp!)

The Caps are scumbags. There really isn't an argument anymore. They did it to the Leafs (game 4) when they were down and now the same to the Pens. Good narrative for me or not, I'm out. Cheering for the Caps lasted all but 3 games. Congrats. Go Preds or Pens.

The best scenario here is the Caps win the next 2 games, then Sid comes back to win the last 2. Would be glorious stuff. If not Chicken still can't beat Croz and that's all that really matters. If they do happen to ship they will have a nice little * next to their Cup for eternity.

*did not beat Sidney Crosby
