Meh. I mean, any team that gets a McDavid / Crosby / Ovechkin level player with a first overall pick is extremely lucky. You could extend that to the guys just a smidge below that like Kane and Matthews too. It is what it is. In order to turn around a failing franchise in most cases you need to be very fortunate or have a ton of patience.
Having said that, the Oilers as an organization have been completely inept for years despite having all of the resources to pull themselves out of mediocrity. For that reason I actually think their fans deserve to see some success. I feel the same way with Toronto. The last decade has been miserable to both fanbases and now they both look poised to be serious contenders in their respective conferences for the forseeable future.
I do not apply that logic to the Caps though. I am hopeful that they never get out of the second round in the Ovechkin era.
