What, winning?

Instead of complaining about the wings cheating, maybe invest in a goalie that isn't terrible.

Re: NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs 2015

The Caps-Isles series has had some really outstanding playoff style hockey on both sides, and has been a tesion-filled delight to watch. These two teams seem so evenly matched, with the momentum often swinging back & forth. Maybe the Caps being at home for tonight's series finale will give them a bit of an edge due to their having the last line change, which will help them keep the Isles Boychuck & Leddy from suffocating the Ovechkin-Backstrom line. But either way, there is likely to be lots of blood on the ice before this one is over tonight. And the team that moves on is going to be very exhausted & beat up.

Agree. From a caps fan perspective, I've gotta say it's been a rollercoaster, much like poker.

Home ice advantage is going to be huge tonight and if the caps score first (1/6 this series) I'd say we're going to win 80% of the time

Re: NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs 2015

I regret that I haven't had time to watch much other than the Wings games. And how annoying that tonight's grand total of two games happen to be at exactly the same time. I get that they're in the same time zone, but would it kill the league to move one of the games to 8pm, at least?

I am cautiously optimistic about the game tonight. John Cooper is getting outcoached, sure, but he isn't an idiot and TB isn't a bunch of plugs; the Lightning are going to come out firing and I can only hope the Wings survive the onslaught.

Go Wings!

It wasn't ******ed at all. Montreal was on the penalty kill and would have been able to attempt to score from their own goalline without having to worry about being called for icing.

Yup.

I know there's a need to pull goalies, but without being inside of say 30 seconds before the end of the game, I would just change the forecheck and put on 4-5 forwards and 0/1 defenseman and the goalie as opposed to what they do now where everybody has to play so defensively when the other team gets the puck

No icing is a pretty small consideration when your season is on the line imo

When you're 6 on 4 you should be able to stop MTL from getting a decent shot from 200 ft away.

Re: NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs 2015

This is just beginning to be studied but I think preliminary results are that it is optimal to pull your goaltender, when down by one, at about the 3:30 mark if you are on the power play. It doesn't seem obvious to me because of the (non) icing issue, but I think that's what the numbers say to do.

Edit: I believe in the minors we're starting to see it done even earlier — around six or seven minutes. I don't know whether that's been studied.

You already have a man advantage, though. I'd have no problem pulling the goalie with 3 mins left if it was 5-on-5 and they were struggling to generate offence but that obviously wasn't the case. I think the optimal line in that spot is to play out the PP and pull the goalie with like a minute to go or when the MTL penalty ends, that way you get the man advantage and don't have to worry about them taking free shots at the net without any consequences. The bottom line is pulling the goalie on the PP with that much time left leaves you way too vulnerable and allows your opponent to play perfectly against you.

I thought that it was ******ed to not pull the goalie when they had control in the Habs zone.

To me facing elimination its was time for a calculated gamble. /oh well
