Tangradi just cleared waivers. WTH? One way, $750k.

What are we going to do with another goalie? Pay him for a season [instead of Hutch], I guess.

It sounds like cap space for money savings to me.

Tangradi was a better than replacement guy who dropped out of the line-up. He made some plays, had some speed [oh, I guess he didn't, I thought I remembered speed], turned some heads but was just all-right.

Here's an article about how Jets are terrible that's about Tangradi.

Yay, new season! I don't know what to expect for Kings this season. I know they are going to make it to the playoffs for sure. I'll think they will just end up in the middle of the pack of the playoff positioning and let the Ducks or Sharks take the division title so that they have, at least, some pride and accomplishment for the season before the inevitable happens.

Edit: So we get two threads? One for gameday and one for all sorts of interesting news? Cool, moving on up then.

This year realistic chance that no CDN team makes the playoffs. Montreal should be a lock with Price but the rest.................

Vancouver underrated. They should make it even in the west pretty easily. Maybe not easily but they should be a favorite to make the playoffs. Ahead of Dallas and Colorado.

I'll bet on it if anyone is interested

Washington Capitals '14-15

Caps are coming off a disastrous season which mouth breathing dumbasses blame on Ovechkin's plus/minus or selfishness or something. Reality is, the Caps were saddled with one of the worst NHL coaches in years. Someone who ordered his puck moving defensemen to not carry the puck, but dump and chase instead. Someone who decided to **** with his #1 goalie's technique because he knew the position better than the goalie and goaltending coach, with predictable results. Someone who eschewed puck possession for "touches." Idiot.

So what did the Caps do to get over the Ostes fiasco? Did they re-sign Grabovski to fill the 2C hole they've endured for years? Did they hire a progressive puck-control coach to stem the hemorrhaging from Oates? Did they hire Dellow or Mehta or Dubas to fix the front office?

Nope. They hired the existing GM's former-player lackey who had been telecommuting from his couch in Minnesota while working as a marginally competent pro scout. This new chief immediately made a mark by letting Grabo go, ensuring the team would once again have a gaping hole at 2C. Instead, he used the cap space to sign Orpik to an asinine deal while defending it on the grounds that he doesn't "value the Corsi" with players like Orpik, because heart or something. They also hired a coach who has pretty much never had a plus-possession team, even when he was fortunate enough to have Kariya and Forsberg. But at least he preaches accountability!

Training camp opened with some degree of optimism because people are stupid. Instead, we quickly learned that new coach Trotz wants to change the powerplay because it was too awesome; that a 19 year old rookie is going to be gifted the role of 2C; that the team's best defenseman, John Carlson, will be saddled with Brooks Orpik and fed the toughest minutes and thereby doomed to failure; that the team's third best defenseman, Dmitri Orlov, will be fighting for a roster spot with the ape John Erskine.

In short, this team is ****ed. I expect the team defense to get slightly better at 5v5 and especially 4v5. However, the power play will regress hard. The offense will continue to stagnate thanks to a ****ty system and lack of talent beyond Ovechkin/Backstrom. The MSM dumbasses will blame it on Ovechkin, and laughs will be had. But the real fault will lie with management who hires coaches who continue to eschew puck possession and refuses to put together a competent second line.

Predicted finish: 4th in the Metro, out of the playoffs.

Go Isles.

Where NHL Coaching Changes Did, and Didn’t, Help Their Teams

Using NHL Coaching Changes to Identify Historically Good and Bad Coaches

also it's not a narrative as much as it's a fact. michel therrien had a team with sidney crosby and evgeni malkin playing at like 45% possession. he's terrible and would hold back any team.

Lets work on what is "fact" and what is an opinion based on cherry picked stats that stand in the face of the actual results.

- the "fact" is, a team with only an elite goalie and dman and no elite forwards that makes it to the final 4 but the coach is holding them back type sentiment is not something that is going to pass anywhere but in your mind.

- the "facts" are, only Subban and Price hold the Habs from being in the bottom 20% of the league in talent and that is being kind.

- the "fact" is, any coaching list that has Scotty "****ing" Bowman in its bottom 25% should be nuked from orbit let alone read or quoted ffs. What are you measuring coulda, shoulda and woulda?

Besides would I go to this much trouble defending a french coach on the Habs to a french guy if I didn't absolutely KNOW I was right? :sheesh:

Kings projected lineup:

Gaborik – Kopitar – Brown
Pearson – Carter – Toffoli
King – Richards – Williams
Clifford – Stoll – Lewis
Nolan – Andreoff

Muzzin – Doughty
Regehr – Voynov
Martinez – Greene
McNabb

Quick
Jones

Looks familiar.

^^ All right, that's very workable, I think. As long as that 2nd line doesn't break up, when/if things go dry, and Gaborik keeps healthy, and as long as Martinez is still in good graces, we're going to be fine.

Bowman is because lol Sabres.

Context is here:

http://hockey-graphs.com/2014/09/24/...d-bad-coaches/

Cliff notes: Charts whether teams improved or declined with mid-season coaching changes. Sample size is a big issue here as are outside variables (injuries, trades, strength of schedule, playoff runs or lack thereof). A mediocre coach who replaces a terrible coach is going to look a lot better than if that same guy replaced a mediocre (or better) coach. There's also a big confirmation bias - coaches generally only get fired because things are going badly even if it isn't the coach's fault or the coach was previously successfull with that team. So replacement coaches should have an inherant advantage and a coach could have a significant career with a team, get fired due to a slump (especially a slow start) and none of the previous success is a factor in this evaluation.
