What shortening contracts will do is help ensure the players who deserve the money are more likely to get it. It definitely hurts the older good players who can't sign that last big deal with a couple bonus years tacked on.

Look what has happened in the NBA. Short contracts mean more opportunity for player movement and player collusion. If I were the players I would bargain shorter contracts for earlier free agency.

yeah, the money has to go somewhere, so RFAs in their prime will probably end up getting it instead

there won't be a point in playing hardball with the Nylanders of the world

and the last couple years the league has seemed to get smart about not overpaying old UFAs, kind of like what has happened in MLB
